HBO had the upper hand over SHOWTIME for years with The Sopranos and Sex and the City, but recently SHOWTIME has fired back with shows like Weeds. HBO and SHOWTIME can get away with more racy and shocking programming, because viewers have to pay extra to see it. On the surface, it might be easy to lump in Showtime's This American Life under the category of Reality Television. Yet to look at Showtime's TV version of the radio program produced for over a decade by Chicago Public Radio and hosted by Ira Glass, this really isn't a fair association. With no prize money or goofy angle to speak of, perhaps this could be categorized as "Hyper-Reality TV", as the stories contained on this series do not feel filtered or manipulated in any way. Just look at the Oscar-winning turn by Javier Bardem as Anton Chigurgh in No Country for Old Men or the popularity of Heath Ledger's Joker in The Dark Knight, but on the small-screen one serial killer seems to stands severed head and shoulders above the rest - Michael C. Hall's Dexter Morgan. For those that have never seen our favorite TV maniac on Showtime's Dexter, the series revolves around the serial killer and how his impulses and obsession effect the lives of the day to day people in his life; the only catch is, Dexter is actually the hero of this show. After a solid first season, the second season of takes us to even darker places, and in a season full of blood twists and turns, not everyone is able to get away clean. »»
