As we get ready for the 2011 baseball season, I want to look back 10 years ago to the 2001 Amateur Draft. The first round consisted of 44 players, with 26 of them playing in the major leagues in the past ten years. Those players drafted in the fi »»
Chad Qualls, who has struggled mightily in 2010, was traded by the Arizona Diamondbacks to the Tampa Bay Rays for the immortal player to be named later. Qualls’ 2010 season has been nothing less than a total abomination—he is 1-4 with an 8.29 ERA »»

A little while ago, I as watching a baseball game on television, and I started to wonder about the teams that were playing and how they got their names. I started to do a little research into some team names and found the history interesting. This »»
Look, there are a number of angles to explore here. Will the Phillies be rusty after a week-long layoff? Did the seven-game split-decision with the Red Sox sap the Rays dry? Do the Rays have any answer for the Cole Hamels Express? Which Phillies offense will show up: the flaccid squad that couldn't hit the Brewers or the not-as-impotent troupe that defeated the Dodgers? »»
My biggest gripe about the Rays is the misconception that this team was built through draft picks. While they have had some good picks in the last few years, this team has relied just as much on trades and free agent signings. »»
The Rays make for a cute, cuddly bunch of base stealing scamps who have a whale of a pitching staff, but an inferior offense to the Red Sox. I'll be the first one to call myself out for eating it with my White Sox/Rays guess, but unlike Chicago, Boston's "O" can run with Tampa's (3rd vs. 1st in team stolen bases) and reaches base better than anyone in the AL. Throw in a comparable allocation of arms on the mound and I see a competitive series, but one that's still easy to call. »»
As much as I loved seeing the Cubs be swept, it brings back my biggest problem with the MLB Post-Season - The Wild Card. I do like having a wild card; it's made the playoff race more exciting since the WC normally goes down to the last day of the season. The problem lies in the best of 5 series. »»
This year, I'm doing things a little different - I'm using Sabremetric stats to pick the award winners. My formula takes Value Above Replacement Player, Win Shares, Revised Zone Rating, and Win Probablity Added. For pitchers, I switched RZR for Pitching Runs Created. For rookies, I only used VORP - it's easier to compare hitters and pitchers (for the record, a pitcher must have an increadible season to be up for the MVP; also, I'm not a fan of closers winning the Cy Young - how can a closer win an award for top pitcher when they only pitch if their team is winning by 1-3 runs). The Manager and Executive of the Year were my gut choices. »»
