The Mean 10.11.01: Special Edition Response

Archive

Hey for the second day in a row.

This isn’t something we usually do at 411, but the reader response to the column I wrote yesterday about the good things in wrestling has been overwhelming and brought a smile to my face. I asked Widro if I could post the responses as a column and he’s given me the go-ahead hopefully you’ll read these responses and have a smile on your face as well, and remember why it’s so fun to be a wrestling fan

-“What a great column! I get so tired of people whining and bitching about every little thing, instead of just being along for the ride and enjoying the show. You really put a smile on my face.”

-“I agree with you. I think that you put in words the exact reason why I, at

38 years old and the owner of my own construction company, still watch RAW

every Monday. In fact, I look forward to the two hours of “escapism” it

allows me with all that goes on in my life.”

-“Dude, I couldn’t agree more with your list of reasons you like wrestling. I enjoy reading Internet wrestling sites (mostly 411 due to the lack of pop-up ads – THANK YOU!) but sometimes they do sound quite jaded and negative. I’ll log on the morning after a Raw or Smackdown that I enjoyed, only to hear reasons that the show sucked (whatupwitdat?). Thank you for pointing out so many of the things that make wrestling today so enjoyable.”

-“That was a great article. The concept has the potential to be an Internet ‘keeper,’ much the way Scherer’s Rhetorical Questions are. Not to mention just plain spreading positive energy is nice. With Widro slacking as a writer, you have slid nicely into the position of ‘must-read-411-columnist. (sorry boss, had to include that one –Ben)”

-“Benny : You’ tha Man !!!!!

Very Well written piece, it’s about time that someone did open the lid and say it out loud, I LIKE WRESTLING!!!!! Everyone watches wrestling, and only sour puss megalomaniacs attempt to over criticize (?) the sport. Why are they watching, if they do not like it ? Because they do like it, only their personal psychological, paranoid over indulgent Napoleonic delusions of grandeur forces them to write as if they were wrestling Gods with constipation. I second your opinion, and forever support you. Spread the word!”

-“Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! So many people have been talking and complaining about how wrestling is taking a plunge into unpopularity. Nothing lasts forever. I look at wrestling like the nation’s economy. There’s a great bull market where unemployment is low and everyone’s making a lot of money, and then the economy goes into recession. It’s not some unexplainable phenomenon. The same with wrestling: good period, bad period. Wrestling can’t always be well written. The main reason, however, that I’m writing this is that it’s great to hear someone pointing out all the good things about wrestling. For a time, I was very critical about what was happening while my friends thought the shows were fun to watch. After reading your article, I have to admit: Wrestling IS fun. It’s awesome to just sit back and watch these men and women give their all just to entertain us. Stone Cold’s present character is great, Rob Van Dam has added a new spark to the program, and yes, Test is coming into his own. Granted, some of the gimmicks are idiotic, but that doesn’t mean that the wrestling isn’t as exciting to watch as it was before. So wrestling has reached a low point. So what? You brought up many great examples of why I (and probably most other people) continue to watch. It’s great to hear some positive comments about the WWF. Great article and keep up the excellent work!

– “Hi there, Ben,

I wanted to write to you and tell you how much I appreciated your column. I tend to avoid opinion columns because, while being “smart” about the wrestling industry, I find that all the negativity in columns and reporting really tends to ruin the enjoyment of just watching it. Case in point, for me especially, is the Hardy Boys. My friends and I are big fans of theirs, but lately it seems we find nothing but things to complain about with them: lack of push, being saddled by Lita, lack of clean wins, lack of a good, gripping storyline, etc…. and then your column comes along with several very true bright spots about them — most of the main reasons I personally became a fan of theirs. And they are just one example. So good for you for coming out with a much-needed wake-up call for us Internet wrestling fans. Please, please, PLEASE keep up the great work (and positivity!), and thank you for not being a “smart,” but being a fan.”

-“I have to tell you that I don’t respond to any columns on 411, (although I did sent an ah hell yeah letter to Hyatte a few weeks ago), I agree with you 100% and think that you wrote a great column this week. Thank God for people who love wrestling.”

Thank you to everybody who responded, it’s good to know I’m not alone. Enjoy everybody, and in the mean time, thanks for reading.
