A Wrestling Tale 6.17.02: To Debra, To Steve, And To The Fans

To Debra:

Did he tell you he loved you?

Did he say that he was sorry? Did he say he felt like a different person when he did what he did?

Did he tell you it was the alcohol? Did he tell you that he didn’t like hitting you? Did he tell you he’d make it up to you? Did he get drunk the next night and do it again?

Did he tell you it was hard to leave work at the arena? Did he tell you it was because of the stress? Did he tell you that it was the writer’s fault? Did he tell you that if he could be happy again, he’d make you happy again?

Did he tell you to shut up?

Did he tell you that you’re nothing but a whore?

Did he play the what game with you as you begged him to stop?

Did he tell you it was his father’s fault? Did he tell you he had issues? Did he tell you he’d get help?

Did he tell you reminded him of his ex-wife?

Did he tell you to stop crying?

Did he tell you to get your ass out of the closet?

Did he tell you to swear to never tell a soul?

Did he make you laugh sometimes? Did he send you flowers and buy you jewelry? Did he sing to you when no one else was around?

Did he tell you he’d kill himself if you left him?

Did he tell you he’d kill you if you left him?

Did he say nothing as you lied on the floor shaking? Or did he tell you to fix yourself up?

Did he tell you it was your fault?

Did he ask you why he made him do this to you?

Did you feel guilty?

Did he beg you to forgive him? Did you?

Did the other people backstage try to ignore your bruises? Did you tell them you fell down the stairs? Did you tell them you tripped? Did you finally tell one of them what was happening? Did one of them tell you to leave him? Did you tell them you wouldn’t?

Did he ever show you one of those guns he loves so much? Did he show it to you up close? Did he show you the barrel? Did he ever pull the trigger on an unloaded weapon in front of you?

Did you ever stare at the phone and think about calling the football player? A friend? A priest? A cop? A suicide prevention line?

Did you finally call the police because it became too much? Or did you do it because he wouldn’t be making as much money anymore?

Did he tell you he was sorry before he fled the scene?

Did he tell you you’d never be safe?

Do you know where he is?

Do you feel safe now?

To misquote Tom Wolf, the first wife or husband is for better or worse. The second wife or husband should be for better. This isn’t better. Dump him and move on. Tell him if he tries to come after you, you’ll kill him. Cowards shy away after that.

To Steve:

Some people say this story is none of our business. Well, I’m making it my business. Steve, you leave Debra alone. You never touch her in a menacing way again. You are a man who weighs over 250 pounds. You have no right to hit a woman who weighs less then half what you do.

You pussy. You flaming coward. You miserable drunk.

I swear to God, you hit her one more time and I will some how make my way down to Texas to beat the hell out of you. I swear to God, I won’t be alone.

To the Fans:

We have sat back and watched for too long. We have shook our heads and wagged our fingers and done nothing. No more. I call for a net wide threat towards Stone Cold Steve Austin if he ever touches his wife again. Come on, the thousands of us can take one drunk redneck with a bad knee.

Besides, imagine how cool it would be to drop everything to say you were going to Texas to beat up a wife beating wrestler with 1000 other people?

Then we can tell Steve Austin we love him, and we’re sorry.
