Roundtable Review: Daredevil #43

Archive

Well the 411 review staff is at it again with a little discussion about another Bendis title. People are going to think that the guy is paying us to do round table discussions about his titles. Anyway, it turns out we don’t have as many reviewers reading Daredevil as we did with Ultimate Spiderman but you guys will have to be happy with the 3 I got. Why you ask? Because I say so, and more importantly, so do the guys that wrote these reviews. So without further ado:

Daredevil # 43
Reviewer: The 411 Staff
Story Title: Lowlife, Part 3
Written by: Brian Michael Bendis
Penciled by: Alex Maleev
Inked by: Alex Maleev
Colored by: Matt Hollingsworth
Lettered by: Cory Petit
Editor: Joe Quesada
Publisher: Marvel

Kevin Rapp had this to say:

So, Matt gets another lecture about his behavior. And, again, I completely agree with the guy who’s telling Matt he’s a jackass. Bendis does a phenomenal job with the conflict between Luke Cage and Daredevil. Hell, Bendis does a phenomenal job with everything in this issue. Maleev, of course, knocks another out of the park. Another home run issue. Can’t wait for the next.

Jeff Vice also thought it was pretty good:

“Roundtable” review: A stronger “breather” story than the most recent issue
of “Ultimate Spider-Man,” which was still decent, admittedly. Writer Brian
Michael Bendis continues to keep us in suspense about whether the whole
title’s status quo is changing. And he also continues to develop the most
interesting female character to hit this title since some gal named Elektra.
What is this, a romance title?

Starman Matt Morrison had a different take though:

I reviewed this book a few weeks ago and my complaints about it still stand. The writing and artwork are good, but there’s no super heroic action worth speaking of. The ongoing plot and cliffhanger from last issue are barely addressed and are used in only 4 pages at the beginning, and end up setting up…yet another cliffhanger. What does that leave? Three conversations with a blind woman, Foggy Nelson and Luke Cage that are well written and their characters are developed well, but with the exception of the conversation with Luke, do little more than reestablish what we already know. (Foggy still isn’t happy with Matt being a vigilante and that Milla is still crushing on Matt.) It was all technically proficient, but I feel like we’re still jogging in place.

Well there you have it, some varying opinions on comicdoms newest movie star, it just goes to show that there are all kinds of tastes when it comes to comics. Not everyone feels the need to have spandex throughout an issue, or even a story arc for that matter, and yet there are others who come to comics looking for just that…an escape from real life.
