The first part of the much-anticipated Blitz story line, Flash #197, reviewed here at 411, (re)established the Flash‘s opposite number for this arc — namely Zoom, formerly known as Professor Zoom and theReverse-Flash. While last month’s issue spotlighted solely Zoom, the current issue, #198, goes the other way creatively and does more with less to reassert Zoom as the arch-nemesis of Flash. His appearance in the issue is not as pronounced, but has readers wondering about when he will strike, where he’s lurking, and how this arc will turn the Flash franchise on its ear after July’s Flash #200, as writer Geoff Johns has indicated.

Geoff Johns has established himself as DC’s creative iron man and go-to-guy over the last few years. Its surprising that such a prolific writer can continue to produce such high quality work in the volume that he delivers every month. His strength seems to be his understanding of his characters and their essence.

Flash #198 delivers many human moments that has readers almost forgetting that the lead character runs around in tights. This book is very much about Wally West and what makes him the Flash, and his many other roles, including nephew to Iris Allen, mentor to Bart Allen, and others.

I’m loath to give anything away about this great story.

What I will say is that there are many touching “real” moments here — including joy, estrangement, and unintended condescension. In addition, we also have some super hero book mainstays — like a slugfest with an arch-villain, namely Zoom — a team-up, with Jay Garrick, the first Flash — and a guest star (sorta), the Spectre.

Oh, and Geoff John’s continues to deliver the best last page in comics today.

Its sad that penciler Scott Kolins will be leaving the title after the Blitz arc. He’s helped define the Flash over the years and has really brought Geoff Johns’ vision of a Rogues Gallery that is relevant in the 21st century to life. Kolins’ rogues are scary and stylish — his take on Zoom is just beautiful.

James Sinclair’s coloring also continues to be a strong element and influence in defining the tone of the book. You really don’t appreciate what a colorist can add to a story until you see his continued contribution to this title. His work is consistent and of high quality.

Blitz delivers. Get on board this arc now! There’s more on the horizon. Be here for the ride!
