A lone figure stands upon a great balcony.

Chris: (yelling) Does anyone read my reviews of this book?

A cacophony of crickets can be heard in the background.

Chris: Hellooooo?

Cricket King: Oh what the hell. This used to be a real quiet space. Let’s leave guys.

The scream of the crickets abruptly ends.

The erstwhile writer throws his arms to the heavens.

Chris: What the hell can I do to get people to read this book!

For those that care, see my challenge at reviews end.

When Glum, is good

Recent issues of Savage Dragon have seen an epic battle for Dragon in dangerous Dimension X. As has been a major focus since the 100th issue spectacular, we get an adventure fraught with all of the wonderful supporting characters the book has to offer. Not only does Dragon get to cut loose, albeit in a crispy form, but we also see major action for: Jennifer Dragon (the wife), Angel Dragon (the adopted daughter), Alex Wilde (the former partner), not to mention my favorite the pint sized Mr. Glum (potential world conqueror Ba-Goom).

Ba-Goom has been trying to kill Dragon for months now, while striking up an interesting friendship with Angel. As last issue closed out Dragon was surprised by one of his other dimensional selves. As the epic confrontation was left last month, our cuddly old Dragon is in a ton of flash-fried trouble. While it may be a little confusing for new readers to see Dragon fight himself, don’t wonder too much about the why, just enjoy the stew, so to speak.

Savage as he wants to be

Erik Larsen spins an impressive knockdown drag-out battle between the Dragons-two with ample parts Ba-Goom. Not to mention some healthy action for Jennifer and Angel against the mighty Death Seed in Dimension X, and an equally stunning conflict between Alex and Ben Blank at the portal that marks the spot to X. Each of the conflicts is equally compelling, and they all play out concurrently to a dramatic finish.

Larsen throws down with some tight action, and let me say at times quite bloody and somewhat disgusting action as well. We get a nice close to the plotline in Dimension X, but also the beginnings of what’s to come as the storyline closes. After a bunch of all-in-one issues, Erik’s heeded the advice of many fans, and gone with issues that are easily enjoyed on their own, but also leave us with a nice cliffhanger.

This is another near perfect issue of Savage Dragon. From the story down to the art, all the reasons why I read the book are contained herein. This is classic 60’s styled superhero yarn that’s set apart from everything else you’re going to read. If that’s what you’re missing in your comic reading fix, then you now know where to go!

FREE STUFF ALERT

I stand so firmly behind this book that I’m willing to give away copies to the first ten people that respond to this review. Those that already own the book, give those who don’t a chance to respond. I know the book’s great, but do you really need two copies? The only thing I ask is an e-mail back to me stating why you do, or do not like the book. I’ll then cull the comments for a future Words of Questionable Wisdom column. So send those replies! There are no strings attached, no hidden fees, just a great comic book sent to your door, FREE of charge.
