Funk singer Rick James was found dead at the age of 56 in his Los Angeles, CA, home on Friday.
The performer best known for 1981 hit “Super Freak” – sampled in MC Hammer’s “U Can’t Touch This” – fell into legal and drug-related troubles that peaked with his arrest for beating two women in the 1990s.
His most famous album was the triple-platinum Street Songs, and he was recently working on his biography, Memoirs of a Super Freak. He’s also recently been brought back into the mainstream due to his portrayal in skits on “Chappelle’s Show.”
His death was reportedly due to natural causes.
