From Bill Watts Re: Dr. Death Steve Williams

This is in reference to my dear friend, Steve Williams, who was All-Big Eight while at Oklahoma University on their football team, & also was a 4 time All-American in NCAA wrestling there——-and played pro football, & has wrestled professionally, first for me at Mid-South Sports, & in the latter years, mostly in Japan, where he is a true legend. His ‘heart’ is as big as his body——-which the last time he called, he was ‘down’ to under 214 pound, which is lower than his junior high weight.

But, he now faces the biggest challenge ever…

Dear friends,

I got a call from Steve Williams’ (Dr Death Steve Williams of wrestling fame) brother yesterday – with an update that ‘Doc’ wanted him to call me (along with a few others he listed) to keep us informed.

First, the radiation & chemotherapy has not worked. The cancer has apparently spread. In fact, Steve was having such a difficult time breathing well, they did an emergency tracheotomy (forgive my spelling.)

MD Anderson has examined him again, & established there is no cancer in his lungs——yet—–though they found some pneumonia.

They are fully recommending a laryngectomy (removal of Steve’s voice box) to remove or eradicate the cancer in his voice box.

What a traumatic & emotional war this is!

Steve must face ‘tremendous invasive surgery’ for a ‘chance to live.’

He is just 44 years old.

And the emotion of not being able to talk without a synthesizer – & to no longer be able to wrestle, which has been his life!

All that underlying the ‘battle to live ‘ – to see his daughter grow up, to have his family!

Now, the most wonderful thing in all this ‘cloud of darkness,’ the ‘silver lining’ in this thunderstorm, is that Steve accepted Jesus Christ some time back, & has a strong faith!

He knows where he will spend eternity – forever with His Lord & Savior!

What a comfort in this dire time – to know He is not in this alone – & to know his eternal life is secure in our Lord!

What an additional empowerment to encourage him in this fight for his life here.

Please raise him up in prayer to our Lord.

Your friend,
Bill Watts

AJ Styles Fantasy Camp

On Saturday, 9/18, “The Phenomenal” AJ Styles will present a training seminar from 11 am to 2 pm at the Lincoln Center, 2450 Lincoln ST, Highland, IN before Day II of the “Ted Petty Invitational” starts.

From the IWA Mid-South Wrestling Newsletter, “If you’ve ever wanted to get in the ring yourself & get a taste of what it’s like to be a professional wrestler, this is your ‘fantasy camp’ opportunity to learn about what it takes to physically perform in the ring from one of the very best in the business today. The seminar is open to fans with no pro wrestling experience, as well as those who may have some training under their belt already who would like to learn hands-on from AJ.”

The seminar is limited to 25 people & is available on a first come, first served basis for a cost of $75 (which must be paid by Fri, 9/17). If you are interested in participating, please E-mail Patti at RottenWife@aol.com to reserve your spot.

After the training seminar, there will be a fan Q & A at 2 pm with many of the wrestlers appearing during the weekend’s events. Admission is free of charge to all fans, but seating will be limited.

The Q & A will be filmed by Smart Mark Video for a future VHS release.

VETO MESSAGE – No. 21

TO THE ASSEMBLY:
I am returning herewith, without my approval, the following bill:

Assembly Bill Number 10321, entitled:
“AN ACT to amend chapter 912 of the laws of 1920 relating to the regulation of boxing, sparring & wrestling matches, in relation to the promotion of minor professional wrestling exhibitions”

NOT APPROVED

This bill would amend the Boxing & Wrestling Law to separately define & regulate “major” & “minor” wrestling events. The bill would provide that promoters of minor events (defined as events conducted in a venue with a seating capacity of less than 1,500) would be subject to less stringent requirements, while promoters of major events would continue to be governed by existing law. Specifically, the amount of the bond required to be posted with the State Athletic Commission (SAC) to
guaranty the purses, salaries & expenses related to the event would be reduced for minor events from $20,000 to $2,000. A minor event promoter would also be exempt from the requirement of having a licensed physician
present at each event, instead requiring two certified emergency medical technicians to be present. Additionally, the bill would exempt minor promoters from the provision of law subjecting promoters & other participants to criminal sanctions for participating in an event without being licensed by the SAC. The bill would take effect immediately.

While I understand & appreciate the sponsor’s goal of lessening certain burdens related to the promotion of “minor” wrestling events, I am concerned that this bill could inadvertently jeopardize the health & safety of participants. Specifically, I see no compelling rationale
for exempting promoters from the requirement of having a licensed physician present at each event. The mere size of the audience should not dictate the measures taken to ensure the health & safety of participants. Moreover, I have not been presented with any justification from drawing a distinction between minor & major events with respect to violations for conducting such events without a license. Finally, as the SAC notes, a reduction in the bond amount & an elimination of criminal
penalties would unacceptably diminish its regulatory powers over such events & could compromise the health & safety of participants.

The bill is disapproved.
