'Cops' Continues To Thrive

John Langley, the creator and executive producer of “Cops,” has long since resigned himself to the fact that his hit series gets lumped into the same catch-all category with other unscripted programs such as game shows, relationship vehicles and offbeat sports.

He says that the audience recognizes what ‘reality television’ really is and that is the reason that “Cops” continues to remain so successful.

“Winning our time slot every week after 17 seasons is something astonishing in the world of network television, that’s for sure, considering that the show also is running simultaneously on cable and in syndication,” Langley says of “Cops,” which begins a new season Saturday, September 11, on Fox. “I think what people pick up on subliminally — not that anyone is actually sitting around and analyzing this or anything — but they ‘get’ that ‘Cops’ is real and takes you on a journey you don’t normally get to go on.”
