New & Notables: New Releases For The First Half Of September

Well kids, I’m back and a little tardy at that. Boring anecdotes about my life aside, let’s just say I’ve been a really busy beaver with a goddamned broken foot. And lots of tests and other duties. Missing these things by a day isn’t grounds for capital punishment, is it? Didn’t think so. Hopefully all of y’all haven’t run out and blown your money without consulting me first. That’s right, we’re back for round two of Trevor’s Interests In TuesdayS (or TITS, as I’d like to call it…wait…wait…I hear the Gimmick Police coming, okay, okay I rescind! I RESCIND! I retract that last statement!), and this time we’re taking a look at what came out today, and what’ll be coming out next week. So without further adieu, let’s see what’s on the menu for today…

September 21st

Oh, please note that release dates are always subject to change, so if something is coming out and I’ve the wrong date for it, take it up with the band, not me! Ok? OK! And I hate this itty bitty font, too, but I r teh newb when it comes to HTML, so, we’re stuck with some not so fancy schmancy bold and underlined text instead. Yay!

Action Action – Don’t Cut Your Fabric To This Year’s Fashion
Anadivine – Zoo
Mark Chestnutt – Savin’ The Honky Tonk
Chevelle – This Kind Of Thinking Could Do Us In
Clash – London Calling (RE-ISSUE!)
Converge – You Fail Me
Elvis Costello & The Impostors – Delivery Man
DJ Green Lantern – Conspiracy Theory
John Frusciante – DC EP
Green Day – American Idiot
Ben Harper & The Blind Boys – There Will Be A Light
Hot Water Music – New What Next
Jedi Mind Tricks – Legacy Of Blood
Tears For Fears – Everybody Loves A Happy Ending

Aite, well, Action Action have been touring with Taking Back Sunday, so expect alot of comparisons with those blokes. Anadivine’s little fluff piece in the PR Packages I read more or less end up getting slammed because they sound too much like Coheed & Cambria (to which they are associated with, I guess) before being told that they’re actually okay. Read into that however you want, I expect it to suck. Hot Water Music’s new disc is rather melodic and not what I was expecting from them. It’s a very interesting contrast between lead vocals and the melodies that are playing out on the new record, and I’d suggest checking it out.

The Clash and Green Day round out the punk releases this week with some rather hum drum releases. The ‘Vanilla Tapes’ extra CD on the London Calling re-issue is cool for those of you who are Clash Completists, as you get 4-5 new, never before heard songs, but the material is rather lacking. I don’t know if the fact that they were sitting in a storage locker for 20 years led to damage on the tapes, or if they didn’t bother to try cleaning them up, but the sound isn’t all that great. I would recommend getting London Calling Re-Ish if you LURVE the Clash, or if you don’t own this damn album yet (and why DON’T you?). Expect reviews on both of these from me in the next day or so.

DJ Green Lantern. Well, this is something that looks to be nothing more than a hype piece for Eminem’s forthcoming album, as most of these tracks have been on the Internet for months now. Pick it up if you’re one of those ethically challenged people who have qualms against downloading music and laugh as Eminem makes Irv Gotti and Ja Rule his bitches. I would honestly urge you to pick up Jedi Mind Tricks instead, if you’re looking for das hippity hoppity, but either one works, really.

Mark Chestnutt is your obligatory country release of the week. I mean, how can you NOT pimp someone who wrote a song called ‘Bubba Shot The Juke Box’? Umm, yeah…moving along here.

Tears For Fears is probably going to be the biggest disappointment for new releases this week, as this thing has been getting hyped since like January of this year or so. I mean, c’mon, this is Tears For Fucking Fears. What’s next? A WHAM! reunion?

Mr. Costello, Mr. Harper and Mr. Frusciante are all notable for the music snob in you, and I’d go with that order in terms of importance, going greatest to least. I love Frusciante’s stuff, but you gotta wonder exactly how good all this stuff he’s been churning out this year is gonna be.

Converge is your metal release of the week, finally snagging the ‘best band from Boston that isn’t Aerosmith’ title away from New Kids On The Block.

And that does it for this week. My recommendation, out of all of this stuff, would probably be Green Day’s new spin. Yeah, I’m not 100% hot on it, but it’s really not that bad of an album and I’ve got a soft spot in my heart for Green Day.

September 28th

As for the 28th? Well, this is how next week is shaping up to be:

Amon Amarth – Fate Of Norns
Ciara – Goodies
Elvis Costello – Il Sogno
Cradle Of Filth – Nymphetamine
Hope Of States – Lost Riots
Interpol – Antics
Talib Kweli – Beautiful Struggle
Marilyn Manson – Lest We Forget
Pain Of Salvation – Be
Sarah Slean – Day One
Social Distortion – Sex, Love & Rock ‘n Roll
Joss Stone – Mind, Body & Soul
The Used – In Love & Death
Vader – Beast
Brian Wilson – SMiLE

Oddball assortment for this week. Gloomchen should be reviewing Amon Amarth, so expect her waxing on all things AA next week.

Mr. Costello makes back to back appearances, with a classical album out from him this week. Interpol probably holds the title for most anticipated release this week, while Talib Kweli ends up being your obligatory rap release for THIS week.

Manson’s new disc is a greatest hits collection, also featuring a cover of Depeche Mode’s ‘Personal Jesus’. I heard the song and really, it’s more or less what I expected. The greatest hits disc will also come in a limited edition format, with a bonus DVD of material, with all of Manson’s videos contained therein it, along with some bonus goodies. That’s one thing I like about Manson, he never really skimps when it comes to bonus crap for his releases. The LTD version of his last studio spin had a really nice DVD accompanying it.

Cradle of Filth release their first album off of Roadrunner records. Yeah. I don’t know what exactly to think here either, except that I thought the album title was pretty clever.

Sarah Slean and Joss Stone are your female artists that are worth checking out. Think of Sarah Slean as a more sophisticated Gwen Stefani and you’re going in the right direction. I’m really looking forward to this release, and you can expect a review of it when it comes out. Joss Stone makes great ‘older person’ fodder, as that’s more or less who she’s marketed towards.

The Used probably will end up being my pick of the week for the 28th, as it’s been getting rave reviews from everyone, and I’ve liked everything I’ve heard from The Used thus far.

Ciara is your CRUNK release of the week. I guess that means she’s affiliated with Lil Jon or something. Whatever. If I want noise, I’d check out the new Vader disc over Ciara.

Finally, Brian Wilson’s long awaited follow up to Pet Sounds, SMiLE, is due out next Tuesday. Check ‘er out if you’re a Beach Boys fan, and bypass Wilson’s studio album that came out earlier this year.

And that does it for another 2 weeks of new releases. I think I’m gonna go pass out in a corner now, have fun y’all.
