ABC has given a premium script commitment to “The Colony,” a drama project from novelist Gigi Levangie Grazer, wife of Imagine Entertainment principal Brian Grazer. The pilot is in development with, not surprisingly, Imagine Entertainment and 20th Century Fox TV.
Grazer, whose most recent novel is the showbiz comedy “Maneater,” is writing the script about the ritzy residents of the Malibu Colony and the people who work for them.
“I have a great deal of affection and interest in those two different worlds,” says Grazer, who has a home in Malibu. “The colony is just full of very interesting people who are just begging to be written about.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series will focus on a married couple. The wife is a former journalist and the husband is the chief of staff at a large hospital. They come from different backgrounds. Clashes of culture presumably ensue.
Before “Maneater,” Grazer’s previous book was “Rescue Me.” She also was one of several credited screenwriters on the 1998 weepie “Stepmom.” According to the trades, she was encouraged to write for television by Imagine TV head David Nevins and swayed by the success of shows like “Desperate Housewives” and “Nip/Tuck.”
Gigi Levangie Grazer, Nevins, Brian Grazer and Imagine principal Ron Howard will executive produce. Nevins is already looking for potential showrunners.
