Welcome to the Marvel Handbook at the Nexus. Hey Daron this may be one of the biggest issues ever. Are you ready for it?

Um”¦no?

Then let’s start this.

Bill’s second question from last week.

Jim

This is my first time writing since the move, but I stop by the nexus to check out the column. I’ve always loved comics trivia columns.

2) What can you tell me about Project: Pegasus?

Project Pegasus (Potential Energy Group/Alternate Sources/United States) is an enormous research facility a Mount Athena in upstate New York, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. Founded years ago to investigate energy sources other then fossil fuels and other non-renewable resources. Although the existence and location of the project is publicly known, they are unaware of the full extent of the projects facilities and activities. The true project extends 24 stories into the mountain, the two stories above ground, cluster of domes, observatory, radio telescope, a hanger and landing strip, and air control tower.

There are levels inside going from A-H. The Compound is the main research dome. Run by Dr Sorel, his goal is to examine every super human individual in the nation in order to quantify and classify his or her special interest. Among the criminals examined Solar (who died in a mishap at the project), Rhino, Klaw, Electro, Moonstone, Blackout, Bres, Vibro, Nitro, Equinox, Fusion, Nuklo, and others. Many heroes have also volunteered or coerced to be examined Captain America, Quasar, Wundarr, Thundra, Dazzler, Thing, Black Goliath, and Captain Hero. Also Squadron Supreme was staying there for a time. This research also helped to help the government build the Vault. Among the scientist at the project Dr Wilburn, Dr Mayfair, Dr Harkov, and Dr O’Connel. Also Quasar helped guard the project for a time as well as the Guardsman (Mike O’Brien)

Darons question from last week

Actually before I sign off, I have a question for you. I’m sure there are some other people out there who get a bit confused about Scarlet Witch’s powers (as I do). Can you try and explain them for everyone next week?

Sure can Daron. Manny wanted me to cover this to it seems the Avengers Disassembled stuff has everyone wanting information on the Witch and more. Let’s start with a little detail and then I’ll give powers.

Scarlet Witch

Real Name: Wanda Maximoff (presumed last name)
Occupation: Former criminal, now adventurer
Other Aliases: Wanda Frank, Wanda Magnus, Ana Maximoff, Gypsy Witch, Wanda Lensherr
Place Of Birth: Wundagore Mountains, Transia
Marital Status: Divorced
Known Relatives: Magnus Eric Lensherr (father, Magneto), Magda (mother, deceased), Ayla (sister, deceased), Pietro (twinbrother, Quicksilver), Lorna Dane (half-sister, Polaris), Red Lucy (ancestor, deceased), Vision (ex-husband)
Group Affiliation: Avengers, former member of Brotherhood Of Evil Mutants, West Coast Avengers, Force Works, Brides of Set, Lady Liberators, Queen’s Vengeance, and Defenders
First Appearance: Uncanny X-Men #4
Height: 5’7
Weight: 130 lbs
Eye color: Blue
Hair Color: Auburn

Powers: Wanda Maximoff was born Wundagore Mountain (earthly prison to the chaos-demon called Chthon). The otherworldly entity imbued the Scarlet Witch with magical abilities, as he one day hoped to use her as a host to aid his escape. If not for the demon’s intervention, Wanda simply would have been an energy-wielding mutant like her father, Magneto. Instead, she can channel chaos-magic in a number of useful ways. Chief among these are her probability-altering hex-spheres — finite pockets of reality-disrupting, psionic force that cause random disturbances in the molecular-level probability fields surrounding their targets. As a result, unlikely phenomena occur. With greater preparation time, Wanda can cast her hex power to garner specific results.

Further explanation: The Scarlet Witch possesses the mutant power of affecting probability fields. By a combination of gestures and mental concentration, she creates a hex-sphere, a finite pocket of reality-disrupting quasi-psionic force, which upon reaching its intended target, causes disturbance in the molecular-level probability field surrounding the target. Thus, unlikely phenomena will occur. Among the many phenomena she is able to cause are: the sudden melting of gun barrels, the spontaneous combustion of any flammable object, the rapid rust or decay of various organic and inorganic materials, the poltergeist-like deflection of an object in flight, the sudden evacuation of air from a given volume, the disruption of energy transmissions and fields, and so on. These phenomena occur practically instantaneously after the completion of her hex. Her sorcerous training has given her a set of powers separate from her mutant abilities, honing her control over her existing abilities. She has a special affinity for the natural elements and materials that true witches utilize in their spells: the four alchemical elements, wood, organic substances, etc. The reliability factor of her hex-casting ability is also limited by her physical condition: when well rested, in good health, and mentally and emotionally alert, Scarlet Witch can cast numerous hex-spheres in rapid succession and attain desirable results for almost an hour.

Mutant ability to control chaos magic and affect probability fields and accomplished martial artist and hand-to-hand combatant

Basically she can focus her powers to cause some bad stuff to happen to people whenever and wherever she wishes. She also has grown to gain more abilities that have given her powers a boost. She also now knows more magical abilities, which have helped in battle with the likes of Morgan Le Fey. These abilities all have grown to the point where she could be the foe behind Avengers Disassembled. Causing the recreation of Jack of Hearts, the explosion of the mansion, Vision being taken over by an army of Ultrons and spitting them out, and also the Kree attack on the Avengers. If you will notice Wanda was missing during most of these events and also there has been a magical force behind the events occurring in Avengers at this moment. Her powers have grown to a level now where she could even rival Doctor Strange. (But that’s a theory of mine so I could be wrong on the Dr Strange thing and being the main villain behind the Avengers Disassembled)

Some basic history and facts: Active member of the Avengers; former Defender, Brotherhood of Evil Mutants member and Force Works member/leader.

First appearance was as a member of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants with her father and brother as members.

Wanda was taught by Agatha Harkness to harness and control her powers.

Chthon once had Wanda working alongside him for his own goals but in the end she fought him off.

She joined the Avengers second team under Captain America with her brother Quicksilver and fellow former villain Hawkeye.

She’s led both Avengers teams (East and West) at some point in her carrier.

Wanda used her powers to allow herself to be impregnated by the Vision, and gave birth to two boys. Wanda found out that the boys were actually two pieces of the demon Mephisto’s soul given form by her, she went insane, rejoined the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, and then fell in with Immortus, becoming a nexus for all probabilities

Wanda was the one who brought back Simon Williams (Wonder Man) in Ionic form.

Her powers where such a threat that Morgan Le Fey kept her prisoner during Queens Vengeance. (Also called Once an Avenger The first story arc of Avengers Volume 3)

She was once told Whizzer and Ms. America where her parents

Wanda was one of the Wives of Set chosen alongside the likes of Jean Grey, Invisible Woman, Dagger and others.

Wow, Jim. That may be you’re longest and most in depth answer ever here. Thanks a lot for the info. I hope everyone else enjoyed the explanation. – The Overlord

I just wanted to comment on Loki defeating Dormammu in the villain tournament. Are you people DAFT? I guess nobody remembers the Defenders/Avengers War. Loki was Dormammu’s BITCH. He was scared **itless of him.

This is one reason I love you fans. Great issues to mention. Loki and Dormammu team up basically to take out both teams. In the end they are defeated also you’ve got to think about Loki here to. He’s always willing to fall behind someone if it helps him get what he wants like in Acts of Vengeance.

Re: Onslaught’s Heralds

Man, you were way off on the heralds. I’d have to check my old X-Factor collection, but I’m pretty sure none of those guys started working for the Dark Beast until after Onslaught. But more importantly, you totally skipped Post, Mimick, and Blob. Post was a new character created as Onlsaught’s herald, and I’m still not very sure what his powers were supposed to be. Mimick and Blob just got power-ups from Onslaught before they were sent out to fight various X-teams.

Actually I got Post. Just didn’t put the information. Blob and Mimic I missed. X-Force had to face both of them and both got ampted up. Also Dark Beast did have Fatale already as an ally. Havok he just took around the time and Random was revealed to be working for Dark Beast during Onslaught. So all would count.

You tell ‘em, Jim! :) – The Overlord

DA12K12AlN emails

Blade’s mom did appear in comics, though I don’t remember where exactly. She was also on the FOX Spider-Man cartoon back in the early-mid 90’s.

Yep she did. Thanks for helping out.

BL emails

I’ve got to be honest with you, Jim. I like your column and I like your style. But I HATE the Dark Overlord. I hate the he butts in whenever he wants. HEy, if Ashish did that to me at 411 I would go to his house and strangle him with my old X-Force #1’s (I got em all!)

Thank you very much. I can only do this job thanks to the fans and people like you. Also Daron helps me a lot. I’ve got to be honest about it he’s my editor and I’m not one of the best writers in the world. I can make mistakes here or there. He watches my back.

Ah, but you see that’s the point”¦I’m here so you can hate me. Seriously though, there is a reason that this column (and her sister column Who’s Who In The DCU) have their editors interjecting in at various times. Actually, there are two reasons. 1. As good as Jim and Mathan are, they sometimes don’t get their answers 100% right and need a little help filling in their answers, that’s what Ben and I are primarily in these columns for. 2. We’ve had lots of people tell us they enjoy the interplay of the different writers (Jim & I, Mathan & Ben) talking to each other and to the readers. Hell the only reason we keep doing it is because the reaction has been so positive. Believe me BL, if Jim wasn’t cool with the way we did this column we wouldn’t do it this way, it’s his column, I’m just here to help out. – The Overlord

Abdul emails

Hey just read the handbook this week and thought id drop some info about the third Blade movie. Frank Drake is not set to appear in the movie his character was originally supposed to be part of the movie but later written out. Dracula does appear in the movie but his name has been changed to Drake which i guess is supposed to allude to him being Dracula or whatever.

I was going by the rumors I knew of. Frank Drake being a relative of Dracula it’s possible if he is named Drake it could be Frank.

But anyway had three questions that i’d also like some evidence to support your answers as well for you and Daron. Who do you think is behind Avengers Disassembled and why? Honestly I have no clue and have heard it to be everyone from Miracleman to Scarlet Witch to every version of Hank Pym. Unlike most mysteries this one doesn’t seem to have any obvious leads (which i guess most good mysteries shouldn’t have).

Ah good question. I’ve got the information on Wanda above, and it explains my theory of how she could be the villain involved. I actually think she’s teamed with Grim Reaper somehow also. The Jack of Hearts return made me think that. Now this theory also would mean Wanda has gone mad. (Which could explain the events in Captain America/Falcon.) It’s also possible it’s not Wanda at all.

Another theory is being magic is involved it could be a character like Doctor Druid. He could be back from the dead again. Grim Reaper could have brought him back and of course Druid might wish to have revenge.

This also leads to one more theory, Henry Pym being nuts again and joining forces with a magic user. But I’m thinking now more then ever it’s Wanda.

Well to be honest”¦I haven’t read a single issue of Avengers Disassembled yet, I’m way behind on my reading and this is one of the casualties. – The Overlord

The big surprise cameo at the end of Avengers Disassembled that’s supposed to have everyone talking. Any ideas? No clues on this but i’m assuming its not the same person thats behind disassembled and i’m also guessing whoever it is is going to be someone who is going to reappear in New Avengers as a possible adversary.

I’ve been thinking about that. Here’s some of the rumors I’ve heard:

Wolverine (being he’s joining the team)
Sentry (again joining the team)
Cage (again joining the team)
The villain behind the arc (Wanda or whoever)
A mystery new Avenger. (One that is not on the cover of Avengers # 1 Volume 4)

Now the mystery new Avenger thing has led to rumors like Phoenix (Jean), Marvel Boy (current), Silver Surfer, Adam Warlock and a few others.

Also could be a former Avenger not seen yet like Hulk.

My last question is who do you guys think is behind the kidnapping of Aunt May in Mark Millar’s Spider-Man? My guess is Ben Reilly. I say this because whoever the kidnapper is was hanging upside down which is a power Ben would have and secondly because they must be someone who has spent time around Aunt May since they were able to quote something that Aunt May would say to Parker.

Now this one I’ve been debating myself.

I’ve thought about Norman who could be lying but doubt it.

Could be Venom (Eddie Brock) his last revenge and also done before giving up the symbiote.

The Owl of course but doubt that.

J. Jonah Jameson I just wanted to throw that one out for fun

I’m hoping it’s not Ben Reilly because that would mean he’s back from the dead and more clone stuff, which we don’t need.

Okay, I’m going to be real honest with you here. I read the first two issues of this series”¦and wanted rip my eyes out with hot pokers. MK Spider-Man was the easily the worst comic I read all year”¦so past that I’ll reserve any judgment on the villain of the series”¦sorry. Thanks for the questions though. – The Overlord

Derek emails

Even when Marvel comics suck, your column soars . . .

Good to know our column is doing so well.

Anyway, I’ve got a question or a request for some clarification . . . We all know Bendis is going to force feed us Daredevil pretty much in every book he writes, but when he turned up in the pages of the recent issues of the Avengers, it seemed to be implied that Daredevil was “officially” an Avenger at one time. I mean, all the former and honorary members showed up (“we all heard the call” or something like that), so why is the over-rated blind guy showing up? Other than that Bendis-guy having an unnatural fixation for fictional lawyers that is . . .

DD has never been an official Avenger. He was asked a few times but declined it each time. He could join the team now though thanks to Bendis.

Thanks, gang . . . !

Your welcome

I would say that he was there because the Avengers needed help. Even if he’s not an “official” member, he’s a member of the superhero community, and when the most high profile super team needs help it only makes sense that everyone is going to come and help them. – The Overlord

Mike emails to help solve some of our facts.

Hey guys — stumbled on your column a few weeks back and love it. The Marvel Universe Handbook was my favorite guilty pleasure growing up, and your column has the same effect now as the MU did then. Thanks. Wish Mark Gruenwald was still here to join in…

Welcome aboard Mike. Good to have you as a reader.

A couple of things that I noticed that you may want to update:

Love the help when I can get it.

Recently, someone mentioned that Justice and Firestar were married, and commented that they left in Avengers #27 to do so. Not so true. They left in #27 to go explore France and to do school, and commented that when they get back that there may be a wedding. In actuality, they were going undercover at the request of Iron Man to investigate the Triune movement. That was revealed in Avengers Annual 2001. So, they are engaged, but not married yet. Marvel should jump on that! It’s about time for a happy occasion! Since 1961, there has only been 22 weddings between notable characters… That’s one wedding every two years or so… Time for another, Marvel!

Oh good then we can see the wedding. I actually had thought they finally tied the knot while away. Being now they’ve been away for a long time but hell let’s see the wedding in the New Warriors’ new series. It would be a great way to get their minds off the current events. I agree with Mike here it’s time for another big Marvel wedding.

You know, someone else pointed out to me that they weren’t married”¦I thought we mentioned it here, but I guess not. Thanks for the update on that one. – The Overlord

Also, someone mentioned that Terrax was the catalyst for the Warriors to re-team in New Warriors Vol. 2 #1. It was Blastarr, actually. Not surprizing that someone would misremember that fact… Volume 2 is pretty forgettable…

Yep that was me again. I agree with the last series being forgettable.

Sorry to nitpick — just thought I’d join the conversation since I actually knew something that I could share!

Keep up the fun work!

No problem with nitpicking. I’d rather have everything right so I love when people email to help.

Yeah, and I appreciate the help, it takes a lot of time and energy to keep Jim in line”¦ – The Overlord

it was recently mentioned that Magik’s soulsword could do everything that a regular sword could do, but that’s not actually true. It doesn’t actually cut anyone, but do damage to magical beings, and disrupts spells and magical items. The only time I saw someone actually get cut by the sword was Kitty Pryde in Uncanny X-Men #171. That can be explained (somehow) because Kitty was linked to the sword via Illyana, and would later claim it as her own after Illyana’s death. Ergo, through a sidedoor, Kitty was a magical being of somesort. Guilty by association?

See I remembered that myself. I swore the sword could cut a normal person too.

Thanks for listening, guys!

Your welcome, Mike. Email again.

Thanos vs. Onslaught

Mumbles emails

Onslaught vs. Thanos

Thanos can’t figure out how to beat Onslaught. They’ve been battling all over earth with Onslaught getting the better of him. After a psi attack leaves Thanos momentarliy dazed, Onslaught hits him with an uppercut that sends Thanos into space. (Onslaught once knocked Juggernaut across the country with one punch). Thanos lands on the blue area of the moon. He then senses something powerful near him. He digs into the ground and finds the Infinity Gauntlet. With all gems intact, this fight is his now. Onslaught finally arrives on the moon and looks for his opponent. Thanos appears seemingly out of thin air. Using all the powers of the gauntlet, Thanos destroys Onslaught. He then reforms Onslaught’s body in order to crush it over and over again. Satisfied with himself, Thanos relaxes and leaves the moon to go find Death…

Onslaught then delivers the knockout blow. Onslaught looks down at the unconscious Thanos and recalls the battle. Thanos actually had the upper hand for most of the fight while Onslaught continully tried to read Thanos’ alien mind. After finally breaking through Thanos’ defenses, Onslaught unleashed an EMP wave to stop his foe. Knowing that he only momentarily stunned him, Onslaught pulls every metallic object within a 50 mile radius and crushes Thanos with it. He then hurls the huge ball of metal (with Thanos inside) into space. Onslaught then uses his telepathic powers to make Thanos believe that they are still fighting. Thanos lands on the moon with Onslaught close behind him. Onslaught shatters the metal ball and waits as Thanos’ fantasy battle plays out. As soon as Thanos lets his guard down, Onslaught finishes him off.

Winner: Onslaught

Vince emails

Hey Jim! Overlord, What’s going on?

Not to much Vince. Actually been a very busy handbook this week and I’m having fun with it. Daron you want to say anything to Vince?

Um”¦hey Vince, how’s it going? – The Overlord

I think you knew to expect this e-mail on the cosmic tournament. Onslaught vs. Thanos, well of course Thanos wins this one, that’s my vote.

But now you probably want to know how the big guy does this, well this is how I think the battle would go

Right away Onslaught tries a psychic attack against the Titan. But Thanos is ready and has his defenses up deflects any mental assault (Marvel Handbook states that he has mental abilities and is immune to psychic attacks, probably due to his link to his Eternal heritage and don’t forget on his return to the 616 Universe he was even more powerful now because of Death.) This infuriates Onslaught who decides that now is the time for a physical attack, Onslaught after all bitch slapped the Juggernaut across a continent once. But again the Titan is prepared as he first invokes his force field, then teleports behind the Xavier/Magneto hybrid and starts knocking Onslaught around. Then while the armored foe is down Thanos discharges massive amount of cosmic power against Onslaught and starts knocking him around some more. This keeps Onslaught off balance as Thanos rushes his foe and with cosmic powered hands he rips open Onslaughts Armor.

Now this can go two ways, first if Xavier is the host body inside then Thanos reaches in and kills the X-men founder, thus killing Onslaught. (Now in Onslaught the comic crossover they had Thor separate Xavier from the body of Onslaught, thus freeing him from the dude and making him pure energy. But I think that if Xavier was killed the psychic backlash would have done in Onslaught)

Now if this Onslaught was the one without the Xavier host body, then Thanos is prepared for this extreme as well. One of Thanos powers is manipulation of energy, I then see my favorite rogue taking control of the disembodied energy of Onslaught and scattering him to dark reaches of the universe. The last words Onslaught hears before being scattered is Thanos calling him his prison bitch.

And one other way Thanos can deal with Onslaught, if he’s bored with the tournament and doesn’t want to fight anymore, he encases him with a stasis block of energy (as he did to Thor in Blood and Thunder? I think that’s what the crossover was called) and then teleports this third-rate, can’t even keep Manhattan bastard much less face a world destroyer like Thanos, loser to the center of the sun where Onslaught is consumed and dies.

There you go, how I think the battle would go, what can I say I’m biased, Thanos is one of my all time favorite characters.

Well guys, there you go. Thanks for all the kind words, look forward to seeing how this all turns out. You two be good and take care of each other. And Daron, you’re no Thanos, but as world crushing despots goes, you’re aces in my book.

Thanks for everything and I’ll keep in touch, umm that’s not a threat ;)

P.S. If anyone is as interested in Thanos as I am then you might want to check out this site:

Thanos

It’s brilliant and it’s run by a guy named Darkcorvus70’s (Possibly related to Daron, who can tell.) I’m not affiliated with that website just so you know.

I think not! – The Overlord

Onslaught: 3

Thanos: 4

THANOS wins!!!!!!!!!!!!! That’s right I thought we would have tie going into today, but I just opened a new email with the Thanos vote. So Thanos is the ultimate villain. I had fun doing this and I hope to try some more tournaments down the line. Send ideas if you want me to do more. For now, Thanos is the ultimate villain.

Now this one should be fun.

Manolis emails

another idea for a future feature: a reader’s guide to X-Men: The End! I’m familiar with CC’s work since his return to marvel, but I’m getting really confused with all the third-rate characters he created that he likes to inject left and right. A Who is Who of the various featured characters would rock. I’ll even provide you with any panel scans you need, just send me a list :)

You’ve got it buddy. I’ve got this idea for doing this one. I’ll do one issue for the next few weeks till I catch up on the series current issue. After that we’ll continue it once a month till the series is over. It’s going to add a little more information for the Handbook and will allow more fans to come up with ideas like this for future articles. I’ll do this type of stuff whenever you wish.

That’s the end of a long issue Daron. Did you enjoy reading all the information? I’ve got to admit I could’ve done more then I did. I made sure I put the information that was needed at least. I hope the fans enjoy our new feature on X-Men The End too. I’m hoping we can do more features like this in the future too. Also that Scarlet Witch information was fun to Add. If you need more information just ask. I can do more stuff just like it.

Yeah it was a very full edition this week, and knocked those answers out of the park. Except for that one guy ;) I was really happy with this week’s column.

So, you want to sign off, buddy?

Sure thing. The main thing I want to plug before we go is my most recent interview with the writer and artist of Small Gods. This was the most fun I’ve had doing an interview, and the guys provided some really fun and entertaining answers. If you haven’t read it yet, check it out, and if you haven’t tried the book yet give that a look as well. You won’t be sorry.

Also in 144Anima news, we have a big 2 part Halloween special coming, which starts this Sunday. The first part is written by the Nexus’ very own Mike Maillaro, while the second part, which will be posted on Halloween, is written by yours truly. I hope you all join us for the fun.

Reporting from the Marvel Universe, I’m Jim Trabold. Have a great week and see you again for a new edition next week.
