Romo\'s World: Everwood-Episode 7

Archive

The title of this week’s episode is “Best Laid Plans”. Ok the show was all about sex. Maybe I just have a dirty mind but having “laid” in the title of the episode doesn’t seem like a coincidence to me. Oh those sly writers. On to the review.

To start off we get a “Previously on” segment which shows the new girl in town Hannah expressing her interest in Bright and Dr. Jake being rejected by Nina.

We then are showed Edna singing at work, which now doubt ties into last week’s episode to show that she is firmly entrenched in her desire to stay working. Ephram shows up Dr. Jake to get an STD test. He is met with a weird hug and news that his dad is “The Madonna of Medicine.” Dr. Jake expresses his awe of Dr. Brown.

Dr. Jake decides he needs to continue to convince Nina to tell her secret admirer that she has an interest in him. He is actually pretty cool about it.

Amy trying to get Hannah to not wear glasses looks better with glasses. Maybe it’s just me but I like girls with glasses. Hannah asks if Bright home? Amy tries to convince Hannah to forget about Bright. This leads to the, “How far have you gone talk?” Hannah admits to have never kissed a guy before. Amy implies that Bright is a manwhore.
Hannah doesn’t seem to care, she wants Bright for first kiss. Amy wants to find her someone better. PREDICTION: She will turn into a hot girl eventually. Haven’t we seen this before? Ok maybe most of the viewers don’t remember Pretty in Pink but they must have seen its total rip off, She’s All That and the underrated spoof Not Another Teen Movie.

Dr. Jake visits Dr. Brown at his office. Jake uses a really bad random teen male seeking STD test analogy, which includes him mentioning this random teen is raised by a single dad. Dr. Brown makes connection that it is Ephram whom Jake is referring too. Oh man I totally missed that one; I guess that’s why I didn’t make it into medical school. I also didn’t attend law school but hey can’t dumbass Party of Fiver get sued for this obvious breach of confidentiality?

Dr. Abbott is at home and visited by Dr. Brown. Andy declares that. “Ephram and Amy are going to have sex.” Neither parent is too pleased about this development. This leads to a humorous rant by Dr. Abbott lamenting, “How did this happen?” and wondering “Whatever happened to good old fashioned hand holding?” The capper is his line, “My daughter is about to be deflowered by super sperm.” While both doctors feel they are in a bad spot and are unsure about what to tell their kids Dr. Abbott feels he is in worse situation because Amy is a girl. Oh these double standards will never go away will they? Hey what am I complaining about? I benefit from this double standard.

After the commercial break we return to Dr. Brown wanting to talk about sex with Ephram. Andy doesn’t thing Ephram should be having sex with Amy at this time. He says they have plenty of time to get to that point. Ephram seems to actually take this talk to heart. Uh oh. Bad sign. These two never agree on anything.

Dr. Abbott has a tea party with Amy as his way to bring up the sex talk. Amy mentions that the last time they had a tea party was when she was four. Dr. Abbott uses the Easy-Bake Oven as a way to say sex is premature. Wow, Brilliant. Anytime the easy bake over is brought into any discussion is all right with me.

Much to Harold’s surprise Amy says she isn’t thinking of sex that in fact they haven’t talked about it. Amy’s reaction is quite the opposite of the desired affect as she leaves realizing that she is ready to talk about sex with Ephram.

Hannah goes to visit Bright’s work. She uses the idea of getting a job as a ploy to see Bright. Quite impressively out of character for the previously shy recluse. She openly flirts (or attempts to at least) with Bright who takes the bait flirts back before inviting her to a movie.

Andy brags to Nina about his talk to Ephram and how great a father he is. Nina asks Andy out for a date with reservations. She seems to be making her move.

We are then sent to a scene with Amy and Ephram washing a car (who does that with their gf btw). Amy brings up the talk she had with her dad. Ephram tells Amy he went to get an STD test at Dr. Jake’s office. He suspects their parents found out because Nurse Edna told one or both of their parents. Amy’s response is wondering why Ephram didn’t tell her about his STD test and that he is thinking of having sex with Amy. Ok quick lesson Amy, EVERY guy thinks about having sex with pretty much EVERY girl that he knows and isn’t related with.

Then again Ephram pulls the stupid guy thing and reminds Amy he has had sex before and that it won’t be his first time. Yikes, looks like foot in mouth disease is passed down from father to son. Like pretty much every other female with a pulse she isn’t too pleased with Ephram.

After another commercial break we find that the weekly Ephram-Andy fight is in full swing. Ephram realizes that Andy found out about test which is why they had the “sex talk.” Andy slips up big time in this episode in regard to the whole Madison thing. Ephram now knows Andy knows they had sex, he weekly covered that up, and he has no response to Ephram wondering why Andy cares now about him having sex but not before.

Nina walks into the fight. She is looking very hot and decides to cancel the reservations. Oh poor Nina, so sexually frustrated. I hope Andy is worth it.

Amy goes to talk to her grandma Edna and spills out, “You totally ruined my life.” Overdramatic teenagers, what to do with them? Ok so does this whole thing seem totally formulaic here? Amy and Ephram are mad, they both go to yell at family members. Ok back on track. Amy mistakenly accuses Edna her of telling her dad about Ephram. Oddly though Edna does not deny anything. She does however put Amy in her in place, pointing out she is actually mad at Ephram. Amy confesses that she worried she won’t live up to Madison whom she claims is older, more experienced and prettier. Edna does the good grandparent routine and makes Amy feel better.

Edna goes to berate Dr. Jake. Best scene in the show, barely beating out the tea party just for cause Scott Wolf. Edna tells Dr. Jake that he has a “California pea-sized brain.” She threatens him bringing up the whole breaching of confidentiality thing. She leaves with a classic quote “ill buy a broach and stab you in the eyes myself”. Oh man PLEASE let that happen. That might be the best scene in TV history if it did.

After threats of violence we are sent over to Bright walking Hannah home. Hannah goes for a kiss. Bright pulls away. Hannah tells Bright she likes him. Bright knows and didn’t mean to lead her on. Bright says he liked the attention and implies he is lonely. Hannah is mad Bright led her on and doesn’t let him off the hook. Ok is it just me or does this new budding relationship seem to be just a matter of convenience.

Here is my take on the write’s discussion

Writer A-“Ok so we need to get this new girl some guy to date.”
Writer B-“What about Bright? He isn’t doing anything else?”
Producer-“That’s a great idea. Now we don’t need to hire new cast members. The finance guys will love us for this idea.”

Andy and Nina discuss the whole Ephram fight. Man her hair looks great. Andy tells Nina that, “I don’t know what I would do without you.” He comments how good she looks and how pretty she is. Then he tells her she is sorry they couldn’t have gone out because he could have been her wingman for the thousands of single guys out there. Nina is not HAPPY. Maybe it is just me but since when did guys play wingman for their female friends??

Back to the Abbott household and Bright pre-emptively telling Amy not to rag on him (assuming she knows about the Hannah fiasco). But she doesn’t know about Hannah and Bright won’t tell her. Amy gives him a speech about not shutting people out.

Off to a scene with Hannah crying and writing in her book. Nina walks in on the scene. Hannah tells Nina that it’s a bad idea to put your heart on the line. Nina tells Hannah that she is incredibly brave to me. Hanna’s best line so far of her short stint on Everwood, “Shakespeare, what a hack.” I am starting like her. Nina shows her something left on the door stop. Bright has sent her ketchup children (which goes back to their flirting in the restaurant) and a note which simply says, “I’m Sorry!” So how many more episodes till these two hook up? Over-Under of 2.5

The two doctors are now in a get together debating how to stop their kids from having sex. Boarding school and parole-like control devices are mentioned. Ms. Abbott returns which leads to a scene that shows Andy realizing what he is missing by being alone. Ding Ding. Foreshadow.

Amy and Ephram go to see a movie. Amy says it was just an excuse to spend two hours together where they didn’t have to talk about anything. Ephram shows her his test results. He has a clean bill of health. Damn! A good case of syphilis would have been great. Ephram goes into a big blah blah blah apology and tells Amy he dosnt take her or their first time together lightly. He gives Amy a necklace, which I am dubbing the Kobe technique of apologizing to a woman. It totally works! I have gotta try that more often. Too bad I am poor. Amy’s response to Ephram’s apology and gift is “Well I guess it’s a good thing I stayed on the pill.” Which leads to two thoughts in Ephram’s head “Oh I am so getting some,” and “Hey, why was she on the pill?”

Random thoughts on the show:

Ok so I am glad Bright had a bigger role in the show I don’t like him going for Hannah. He needs to party more. If he settles down then there will be two boring couples on the show.

I loved seeing Dr. Jake get put in his place. Edna on the warpath is fun to watch. Hey no Irv in this episode, I guess this is the beginning of the slow fade away for his character.

Even though I get annoyed by Dr. Jake, he isn’t that bad a guy and I kinda hope Nina goes out with him just to spite Andy needs his head checked out.

There is no show next week. It is being pre-empted for Lord of the Rings. Ok I love that movie series but the move scares me because it is taking place in sweeps month. I am assuming that the WB is not too pleased with lower ratings and is looking for other solutions.
