Welcome to the Marvel Handbook at the Nexus.

With the big finale to Avengers Disassembled out now, we’ve got some Avengers information ahead plus plenty on everything else Marvel. So, unless Daron has anything to say let’s start this up.

Well with an intro like that I don’t have much of a choice now do I?

Quick question:

What happened to the Ultimate Adventures title? Was it made a limited series and ended, or was it just ended? What’s become of the Batman-wannabee?

It got canned. It was a bad idea anyway. Most fans hated it to, and the character will likely never appear again. The series ended as of issue 6

Thanks,

Welcome.

Jim

I’ve been reading Ben Morse’s Watchtower. Why do I think he’s missing some of the Avengers?

Well it could be that he just started this up and that he is doing them in alphabetical order. It also looks like he’s leaving out the honorary Avengers. (He could be leaving them for last).

Can you please read it and clear this up for me?

Of course I’ve read it already. I read everyone’s articles on the site. Heck I like reading Ben’s work too. He’s one of our best writers and Daron’s Co-E.I.C. (kissing ass here).

I’ll refrain from comment seeing as I have no reason to kiss ass”¦ – The Overlord

Here’s a list of Avengers just for you. I’ll start with Ben’s list:

Ant-Man/Giant Man/Goliath/Yellowjacket/Dr. Pym
Ant-Man II
Beast
Black Knight III
Black Panther I
Black Widow II
Captain America I
Captain Britain III
Captain Marvel II/Photon
Crystal
Darkhawk
D-Man
Dr. Druid

Now here’s the rest I’m betting he’ll cover:

Falcon II
Firebird
Firestar
Gilgamesh
Hawkeye I/Goliath II
Hellcat
Hercules
Hulk II
Human Torch I
Invisible Woman
Iron Man I
Jack of Hearts
Edwin Jarvis (I love Jarvis I would include him)
Jocasta
Justice
Living Lightning
Machine Man/X-51
Mantis
Mister Fantastic
Mockingbird
Moon Knight
Moondragon
Namor the Sub-Mariner
Quasar
Quicksilver
Rage
Sandman
Scarlet Witch
Sersi
She-Hulk
Silverclaw
Spider-Man
Spider-Woman II
Starfox
Stingray
Swordsman I
Thing
Thor I
Thunderstrike I/Thor IV
Tigra
Triathlon
Two-Gun Kid
U.S. Agent
Vision II
War Machine I/Iron Man IV
Warbird
Wasp

The new members he can list:

Luke Cage
Sentry
Spider-Woman I

Honorary members:

Guardians of the Galaxy
Moira Brandon
Captain Marvel (Mar-Vell)
Deathcry
Iron Man IX
Rick Jones
Magdalene
Marrina
Masque II
Swordsman II
Whizzer I
Yellowjacket II

Those that he should not include:

Avengers Crew (not official Avengers)
Government liaisons (not official Avengers)
Great Lakes Avengers (not official Avengers)
Avengers Forever members (Not official Avengers)
Mc-2 A-Next (alternate universe)
Judgment League Avengers members (Amalgam)
1950s team (alternate universe)

So really he’s doing a great job. The Honorary members he left out for now and that’s ok. He might get them afterwards. If Ben needed the help he would’ve asked me. He knows his Avengers

Thank you.

You’re Welcome

Just what Daron wanted, some facts being cleared up. I was curious about some of this myself

Matthew emails

Hey, Jim/Daron…

Hey Matt

Yo! – The Overlord

Long time reader of your column (since the first one back in the 411 days). Gotta say you guys do some great stuff. Don’t have a question, per se, but I do have some things to note from this week’s edition.

That’s quite alright especially since you’re helping me on something I missed.

First, in AOA, Sabes was more Blink’s foster father than lover. In fact, I can’t recall anything implying any physical relationship, just a father/daughter thing.

Good to have that cleared up. I thought Creed was being a little to frisky with Blink.

Second (and this is the big one), here’s the deal on the 4 inch Rhino. It was done in the latter issues of Deadpool’s ongoing by Gail Simone, issues 65-67 IIRC. DP was hired to gat Rhino’s horn, and instead just ended up shrinking him with Pym particals. Not sure how the key chain went through the horn, and I don’t even know if it was explained, given the nature of the book at the time. Believe it or not, it was very well done, and absolutely hilarious, with Rhino running around charging DP’s foot, DP throwing Rhino into people and knocking them out (they still respected Rhino’s power), and finally DP flushing Rhino down the toilet. Had nothing to do with Austen or Liefeld. I know it’s fun to trash both those guys, but let’s be honest. They do enough on their own without blaming other things on them, too. (Plus, if you’ve read it, you’ll know that this stuff was too good for either of them to pull off!)

I love readers who help out. Thank you very much. I missed those issues of Deadpool. Not sure why I got it mixed with Exiles?. Don’t ask how. But at least now Daron should be happy.

Thanks, Matt. I feel the same way about blaming these guys for something they didn’t do, hence my comments last time. Thanks again for clearing that up, Matt. – The Overlord

Okay, occasionally I’ll check out the latest Wizard, message board, comics shop, and this website to catch up on a few happenings in the comic book world… and all of this talk about the “New Avengers” has intrigued me. Please explain to me the whole deal with “Avengers” being cancelled and the new book/roster. Who died, who quit, who joined, etc… Where’s Cap? Iron Man? Thor? And why did Marvel decide to do all of this? And especially, who the heck is Sentry?

Alright. Brian M. Bendis recently was asked to take over the Avengers. His goal was to help improve sales. What he decided to do was give it a fresh new look. Also all the other titles in the Avengers line would get involved. (Well actually it was a way also to recreate the Avengers line, which has been absent for a time.)

The titles involved would be:

Avengers
Captain America
Iron Man
Thor
Captain America/Falcon
Fantastic Four
Spectacular Spider-Man

Each book would have something happen to a main character to change them in a way. He basically turned the Avengers into targets. Also he wanted to give it a bold new look with the Marvel stars. (Don’t ask me how Luke Cage, Sentry, and Spider-Woman add star power)

Avengers Disassembled started in issue 500. The group is attacked. Jack of Hearts appears (he’s dead) and blows up killing Ant-Man II, Vision would crash a quinjet into the mansion and then unleash an army of Ultrons on the team. The Avengers at the time defeat them and She-Hulk goes Savage and rips apart Vision. Two mystery villains are shown behind the scenes. Also Iron Man would have a hissy fit at the U.N.

501 the team had to take down She-Hulk. Cap had his shoulder dislocated, Wasp was put in a coma, Captain Britain is critical, and Jarvis is put in the ER. She-Hulk was taken away.

502: The team (mostly anyone that’s been an Avenger plus some others) is attacked by the Kree. We see the death of a great Avenger and the worst death yet, Hawkeye. He died a hero but he did not need to die. Also Quasar could be dead.

503 we will find out who did it. I won’t tell you here unless there’s a way to put a spoiler warning on the site. If there is Daron do so. Also there’s one last death here.

Well since I haven’t actually read it, I can’t really do that so everyone will have to read it themselves, or wait a couple days to find out. – The Overlord

Captain America: In Cap he battles the Red Skull again. Also regaining his old ally Diamondback. A fake Diamondback had her neck broken. The real deal is alive and well.

Iron Man: Shellhead had to fight a fake Iron Man and also learned how he was getting drunk. This was all the work of Temugin here.

Thor: Thor must face Ragnarok (sp). Losing a bunch of allies along the way. Valkyire fell out of the sky, Lady Sif promoted, Hogun pierced by arrow, Fandrel shredded, Blader killed. In the end Thor let Ragnorok win. Loki of course was the mastermind behind Ragnorok. Thor is now elsewhere.

Captain America/Falcon: Falcon was running from the law here for the most part. Cap had to help him and also deal with Wanda being in love with him during the story arc.

Fantastic Four: The FF vs. Galactus. This leads to a member of the group becoming the new Herald. (Johnny will be the Herald it looks like).

Spectacular Spider-Man: Spidey was turned into a spider in this one. In the end he got the powers from the movies. He now no longer needs web shooters. He fought a foe named the Queen.

So if you’re counting:

Dead: Hawkeye, Asgard, Quasar (possible), Ant-Man, Vision (can be rebuilt), and Jack of Hearts. We find the ultimate mastermind in Avengers # 503.

Cap and Iron Man both will be part of the new team. Thor right now must decide what to do next.

Now, let me cover Sentry.

Real Name: Robert Bob Reynolds
Occupation: Adventurer
Legal Status: Citizen of the United States with no criminal record
Other Aliases: None Known
Place of Birth: Somewhere in the United States
Marital Status: Married
Known Relatives: Lindy Reynolds (wife)
Group Membership: Partner of Scout
Base of Operations: The Watchtower
Height: 6′ 2″
Weight: 200 lbs
Eyes: Blue
Hair: Blonde
Powers: The Sentry has the power of flight, super-strength, super-speed, invulnerability and the ability to control light.
First appearance: Sentry # 1

Sentry is the secret superhero who no one remembered. He first appeared in a limited series. We find out everything there is to know about him there. Pick it up if you can.

I agree 100% with this last part. The Sentry miniseries is excellent and everyone should pick up the trade or the issues if you haven’t yet. Hell he’s the only reason I’m even giving the “New Avengers” a try”¦ – The Overlord

BTW– Don’t you think that all of this pretty much means nothing in the long run? Marvel seems to be the worst at relaunching titles and setting new creative directions and it always seems to come back to the usual teams and characters. In the end, the FF will always be there, the X-Men will always have the usual cast, as will Avengers. I find it hard to believe that the “classic” Avengers line-up will not eventually replace the “New Avengers” again and that it will be touted something such as a “new era” although it’ll be the same thing since the 60’s. Not that I’m knocking having a status quo for certain characters and teams, it just irks me when I see things in comics that change just for the sake of change, and then a new writer comes along and decides to put things back to the way they were anyway.

In the long run it won’t mean too much I’m betting. It may add more star power to the team along the way (Bendis has said different characters would join to help in special mission). It’s possible that characters like Silver Surfer, Adam Warlock, Dr. Strange, and Daredevil could join the team during the New Avengers.

For right now though we have a team of

Captain America
Iron Man
Spider-Man
Wolverine
Luke Cage
Spider-Woman I
Sentry

But that’s just me, like I said, I’m not totally informed on the happenings of Marvel & DC. That’s why I came to you!

That’s also why I’m here.

I would guess that you’re probably right about the lineup. Most flashy changes usually end up reverting to the status quo across the board in this industry. I will give some of the changes in Avengers the benefit of the doubt though seeing as the team is almost always changing it’s roster. Plus the book hasn’t been a “major” seller in a long time, so enacting some change could carry some long term ramifications. In the end none of us know for sure, but I’m sure we’ll be seeing most if not all of the “dead” characters back in the near future”¦it is Marvel after all. – The Overlord

Thanks for any info you can offer!

You’re Welcome.

I’m a big fan of the column. I just wanted to point a few things out.

Very cool.

First, Mini-Rhino was in Agent X. I don’t remember the details, but Rhino was after Agent X. Alex Hayden (Agent X) had Rhino shrunk with the Pym Particles and made him his key chain. I also think he was in a hamster cage running on a wheel. I think Gail Simone wrote the story.

Yep someone else told me that to.

Also, you had Alex Summers Jr have the same info as Meg Summers (both were married to Franklin Richards?!?). It also says Meg was single, but lists Franklin as her husband.

Yeah I noticed that after I posted it. I accidentally put Rachel’s info on Meg and Alex Summers Jr. Let me report the bios here.

Meg Summers

I also have a question. I heard Spectacular Spider-Man (which Daron recommended to me, but have yet to pick up) is ending due to Paul Jenkins’ health. What is wrong with him? He is a good guy and I hope he gets better. Thanks

Yep he is leaving the title because of his health and Marvel is canning the book. My bet is that there will be a new Spidey title to replace it along the way. Jenkin’s last issue is slated to ship sometime in March of 2005 after a short fill in by writer Samm Barnes and penciler Scot Eaton who will be completing the “Sins Remembered” storyline. Issue 27 is the last issue.

Here is the Press Release for all the information

“Long time Spider-Man and seminal Marvel writer Paul Jenkins, will be ending his run on Spectacular Spider-Man. Jenkin’s last issue is slated to ship sometime in March of 2005, after a short fill in by writer Samm Barnes and penciler Scot Eaton who will be completing the “Sins Remembered” storyline

Editor in Chief Joe Quesada announced, “Paul is a true professional but I also know that over the last year and a half he’s been fighting some difficult health issues all the while giving Spectacular and the fans his best work. We at Marvel really want to thank him for his years of hard work he’s put into Spider-Man and we’re sorry to see him leave the title. Much like Ultimate Team-Up was a vehicle created for Brian Bendis to shine and then canceled with his departure, the same can be said about Spectacular Spider-Man. Spectacular Spidey was created for Paul and Humberto to tell their brand of Spider-Man stories. Without them attached to the series we’ve decided to close up shop on the title and call it a day with issue # 27. But on that note, stay tuned for some new and exciting Paul Jenkins announcements!”

Jenkins, who gained fame for his ability to relate character-driven stories, has worked on Wolverine: Origin, Incredible Hulk, Sentry and many other titles.

“Some things are too good to be true.” Said Jenkins. “Writing a monthly Spider-Man comic is one of them. These last four or five years have been a wonderful experience for me. I’ve had the opportunity to work with some of the best artists in the world on a character I truly love. Fifty-six issues, by my count; that’s not a bad run at all.

When Mark Buckingham and I were given a chance with PPSM #20, I could not in my wildest dreams have foreseen that I would stay with Spidey for almost five years. Bucky was amazing, a true gentleman who understands the essence of storytelling as well as any artist working today. Without him, I might have lasted a few months at best. After a time, Bucky moved on and I was lucky enough to have been paired with Humberto Ramos. The stories went from strength to strength as Humberto and I were given a chance to revive the Spectacular title, of which I am extremely proud.

Of course, we’ve had a lot of help along the way. Wayne Faucher has been an incredible asset over the years with his brilliant inking. Many colorists, guests artists, letterers and editors have come and gone. I would like to thank John Miesegaes, Axel Alonso, Bill Jemas, Joe Quesada and others for helping us get this title underway. Special thanks to Ralph Macchio for giving me my first shot at Spidey — he’s a good judge of horseflesh, is Ralph. And I would be remiss if I did not single out my good friend Tom Brevoort, who has been a wonderful guide as I made continuity error after continuity error, and who has helped me immensely with his solid sense of storytelling.

Unfortunately, I have had to undergo six knee and ankle surgeries in the last four years and suffered a staph infection as a result of one of them. Don’t worry… my health is okay but I think I need a little time to recharge. While all good things must come to an end, this is far from the end for me. In fact, I am moving onto different projects, and I can’t tell you all how energized I am as I undergo this transition. I have a couple of projects at Marvel that I hope will blow your socks off over the next couple of years — watch the skies for more info. In addition, I am working on numerous video games, I recently directed for the first time and am looking forward to new projects with my production company, Good Cop/Bad Cop. Check out the new video for Scum of The Earth, coming soon to a music channel near you.

Most importantly of all, thanks to all the fans who’ve stuck with me on Spidey over the years. I thank you for your kind words at conventions and in emails, and certainly for buying our humble offering month after month. I hope we have produced a few memorable stories for you.
See you in the funny pages.”

So let’s all hope he gets well soon and does some great stuff for Marvel in the future.

As a side note, if you haven’t picked up the series, I’d recommend trying the first couple trades, but to be brutally honest”¦the book slips big time when Avengers Dissembled starts. I really liked the book up till this “crossover.” I was barely able to finish the issues that were involved with it. So at this point it’s hard for me to really get behind this book anymore. The first few stories are great and worth picking up, but don’t go into it looking for a long term book”¦especially since it’s ending :) – The Overlord

Chase emails

Hey Jim, Daron, how’s it going?

Pretty good. I’m getting over some type of cold/flu myself but I’m feeling better.

Hey Chase”¦it’s all good here. – The Overlord

What I am going to ask you is of the utmost importance (to me, anyway). You see, I am a huge Daredevil fan. I am also a hardcore gamer. When I heard there was going to be a Daredevil videogame, you can only imagine my ecstasy. Well, unfortunately, the game was cancelled, never to see the light of day, breaking my fragile heart.

Or would it? I went to the videogame stores in my local mall, and all claimed to have heard rumblings that the game franchise was rising from the dead! I have looked all over the Internet and found nothing to confirm this, but a man must have faith. I know this may seem like a question for the gaming section, but I asked them already and either I got no response or I got a response I didn’t like and my brain chose to delete said response. Either way, those guys are kind of crazy anyway (not that there’s anything wrong with that) and I figured, it being based on a comic character that I think you guys are cool with, maybe you’d know, or could even find out for me. I would really, REALLY appreciate this, guys. Thank you.

P.S. Maybe if the results are less than favorable, you could just lie to me…

Encore Software as you said has shut down. Now I’ve heard rumblings about Marvel trying to get another company to do a game instead.

Sorry about the double e-mail, but while I’m at it, a few more Daredevil questions, if you please

It’s quite alright Chase. I don’t mind.

1. Do you know where I could get a replica of any of his costume (the cane is the thing I want more than anything – obviously it wouldn’t be able to morph like that, but still)?

Well I’ve never seen a replica of the costume officially. What I have seen is the Daredevil logo shirt (I have one myself). Also if you’ll notice Marvel or should I say Bowen and other companies have been coming out with replicas of objects (Cap’s shield, Cerebro, Cyclops visor to name a few). So it is possible they could make Daredevil’s cane and weapon.

2. Has Daredevil 2 been canned? Or do you think it will be delayed to the point where we’ll never see it, ala the game?

The first sequel will be Elektra. That everyone knows.

As for Daredevil 2 the problem right now is Mister Affleck. He doesn’t want to play DD again for some reason and also is signed to a contract to do another movie. Also Marvel did not list it on their list of upcoming movies.

3. What’s Daredevil’s fight record against Spider-Man? I always thought they were a pretty good match.

They’ve only fought a few times. They team up a lot though. They’re great friends/allies who know each others identities.

Amazing Spider-Man # 16 (it’s a match with the Circus of Crime. Also the first time they fight and team-up. Spidey is being controlled by the Ringmaster. DD wins the match by getting Spidey out of the Ringmasters control.

Daredevil 16-17: Masked Marauder is the main villain here. The Marauder gets some goons to dress as DD against Spidey. Spidey goes after DD of course. DD wins the first match here. Spidey also goes after Foggy Nelson here thinking he’s DD at one point. In 17 Spidey wins a fight with DD. Spidey and DD of course team up in the end again.

Other appearances of the two together:

Marvel Team-Up #25 (team-up vs. Unholy Trio)
Marvel Team-Up #56 (Team-up vs. Blizzard and Electro)
Marvel Team-Up #73 (Team-up vs. the Owl)
Marvel Team-Up Ann # 4 (team-up with others included)
Marvel Team-Up #123 (Team-Up vs. Solarr)
Marvel Team-Up # 140-141 (Team-up with Black Widow and others)

DD would appear in Spidey numerous times

Spectacular # 26-28, 107-110 (in issue # 110 they both reveal their identities to each other), 219,
Amazing # 219,277,286-288 (Gang War),396,426,
Spider-Man # 74
Spider-Man Made Men
Spider-Man: Mysterio Manifesto

Spidey would appear in DD # 27, 54, 77,103, 270, 305-306, 354, Ann # 5; Vol2 # 8

Also they would team up in other titles along the way.

There was also a DD/Spidey limited series called Unusual Suspects

Thanks again, guys.

You’re Welcome

BL emails

I saw your brief mention about Omega Red, citing X-Men: The End.

Anyways, I was curious about what had happened to him. I can recall about 10 years ago (maybe longer!) he was one of the hottest new villians in the X-Men Universe. I can recall that great story that Claremont and Jim Lee did from X-Men #4-7, with Mavierick’s first appearance, Sabretooth thrown in there, the hand, Matsuo, etc. That, of course, has always been one of my favorite stories, not just as a Wolverine story, but as an X-Men story. I really dug that arc.

Anyways, the point is, Whatever happened to Omega Red?

Sure. I’ll cover everything right here.

Omega Red first appeared in X-Men #4 as you stated. Arkady Rossovich or as you know him Omega Red was a Russian agent. He’s appeared numerous times against different foes. We also find out more of his past along the way. Here’s an issue list.

X-Men # 4-7 (First battle against the X-Men)
Wolverine # 61 (revelations about the past and battle with Wraith)
X-Men # 17-19 (alongside Soul Skinner he battles the X-Men again)
Generation X # 10-11 (A battle between Banshee and Omega Red in the past is revealed as the team fights Omega Red)
Iron Man # 295-297 (Shell head vs. Modok vs. Omega Red)
Daredevil # 368 (DD vs. Omega Red)
X-Factor # 138 (Sabretooth vs. Omega Red)
Maverick (one shot) (Maverick vs. Omega Red vs. Sabretooth)
Maverick # 10-12 (Maverick vs. Omega Red)
Quicksilver 6,8-9 (Working for Magneto him and a group of mutants fight Quicksilver and Wundagore.)
X-Men Liberators # 1-4 (Colossus, Nightcrawler and Wolverine vs. Omega Red.)
Uncanny X-Men # 380 (We see him as all mutants lose their powers)

P.S. I am still trying to to figure out why I even buy Rob Liefield’s new X-Force book. It is so hard to follow. Maybe I am a dummy, I dunno. Not as smart as Liefeild though. If you are smart enough to make a career in comics with HIS limited talent, you are a freaking genius.

Could be that we where all fooled or just the fact the characters in the book are great. It’s only the fact that Liefield is doing it that it sucks. If someone else brought back X-Force I bet it would be ongoing.

You know BL, I too wonder why you (well anyone really) buys that book. I also wonder how Liefeld still has a career. It seems though that like the Holy Grail, these are answers we’ll most likely never find. – The Overlord

Thanks Fellers

You’re Welcome.

Our pleasure. – The Overlord

There’s another action packed Handbook for everyone. I’m enjoying these long columns. I hope we can keep them up. Daron, any final words?

Well it looks like we were able to get through the week without pissing anyone off this time”¦so that’s good. As ever I’d like to throw a quick pimp to 144Anima.com where we wrapped up our 2-part Halloween story this week. Also, we’ve got a special new writer bringing his first strip to the table in the very near future, and it’s name you’ve seen around here before”¦so make sure to be looking out for that. Past that, have a great week everyone and we’ll see you next time.

Reporting from the Marvel Universe I’m Jim Trabold. Have a good week and see you again next issue.
