HEY!? WHERE’S TIM!? HEY!? WHERE’S DC NEWS & VIEWS?!

Dani: Tim, who cares about Tim. Let’s focus on something better then an intro: take a look up on the screen above this and feast your eyes on a work of art, the new logo. Oh yeah, it’s a beauty. Pure genius. It’s just sexy, plain and simple. All else fails to compare to the glory that is the DC News & Views logo.

This week, DC News & Views is brought to you by the powers that be and me, James Hatton. Once again, I am joined by the amazing stylings of Danielle O’Brien, my lifepartner in all things comics. Tim is not with us this us this week, as he is on mission in the deep jungles of Africa trying to find out who the real Identity Crisis killer is. We here at Comics Nexus wish him well, and godspeed. It was this very mystery that caused the lateness of this column – BELIEVE IT… OR NOT!

DANI: As you can see, Tim asking the two of us to take over for the week while he was away on this mission was a genuis idea. Not only is our column packed full of news, it’s incredibly late. I take most of the blame for that. You see, I’m what you’d call a primadonna. Jamie’s been done with his half of the column for weeks now, he’s just that good. I on the other hand need days of resting and relaxing before I can even think to start writing. I tried to be the bigger person and explain to him, “hun, you can hand it in without me.” But he realized in the deepest recess of his ego that he needed me. I am the shining star of this dynamic duo.

(In all truth, don’t try to cram hours worth of design homework in a weekend. It’s not healthy (she says while typing this out in her promotional design class).

Before we begin, let it be knownst that I am totally going to be carried through this column by Dani, as I know jack about the DCU – but that’s what the Nexus is about, different view points. We’re like the Different Strokes of Comics opinions.

DANI: Seriously, I grab all of Jamies books off the shelf at the store. He reads like no DC whatsoever.

I can’t believe my web site has come to this…-Ben

THE NEWS!

Rebirth Outsells Jesus!

From a Press Relase available at Newsarama:

With the first issue of the red-hot miniseries GREEN LANTERN: REBIRTH (AUG040383) sold out at DC Comics days before its in store date of October 27, the publisher has rushed the issue back to press. Written by Geoff Johns with art and cover by Ethan Van Sciver, GREEN LANTERN: REBIRTH #1 Second Printing (SEP048097) is scheduled to arrive in stores on November 17 with a new cover by Van Sciver.

It seems there used to be this old Green Lantern character by the name of Hal Jordan. Everyone loved him, and all was great with the world. Then, a man came out of the woodwork and killed this Green Lantern that everyone knew and loved. There was a shock collected from the voices of comic fandom. It seems not only is this a book that I’m not reading, but a book that everyone LOVES that I’m not reading. The initial reports are coming back that it is an excellent telling of the story and is going to be riding the high-wave for months to come.

If you are a GL fan. A must have.

DANI: Hal Jordan yes, Kyle Rayner no!

I have no idea. I’ve never actually read a Green Lantern book so I can’t really comment. I just know that whenever 2 hardcore geeks are arguing, you have a good shot that they are screaming about who the better Green Lantern is.

This was one of the best comics I have read in years and this is what my “crack news team” gives me. Tim is going to kill you both, probably with his eyes, he’ll feel that strongly.

Rebirth was a work of art; I strongly suggest checking out Mathan’s review for more info. -Ben

After there was Robin – but before there was Nightwing…

Found at Newsarama

After the events of “War Games,” Dick Grayson deserves a few moments to look back over his career’and Chuck Dixon, Scott Beatty, & Scott McDaniel are on hand to help with “Nightwing: Year One,” which begins in Nightwing #101. It fits between Dick being fired as Robin (the exact particulars of which were never really shown) to him showing up in the Titans’ title as Nightwing,” Chuck Dixon told CSN. “Where’d he get the name? How did he come to the decisions he made and what was the final understanding he and Batman reached. Plus a bunch of continuity surprises for the dedicated fan geek in all of us.””

I’m going to let Danielle comment on this one, as I know this is a discussion that she will do so much better than I:

DANI: Ahh, Nightwing. My superhero comic book boyfriend. You could say I have a little obsession here. I love Nightwing. My love stems all the way back from watching the old Batman TV show from the sixities on re-runs when I was younger. I was in love with Burt Ward’s Robin. I wanted him and Batgirl to get tgether in the show cause they’d make the cutest couple, but we’ll get to that soon. I would only watch the episodes of the Batman animated series that had Robin in them. You could say I’ve got a weird crazy thing going for him.

You could also say that the fact that your love of Robin springing from Burt f’n Ward makes you no judge in any reasonable person’s mind of the well being of Dick Grayson…good lord…-Ben

When I started reading comics in the nineties I decided to pick up a Batman book and see where my favorite character was. Boy was I surprised to find out some guy named Tim Drake was Robin and that my Dick Grayson was a super-hero named Nightwing. A new love was born.

Oh, but on to the story. I’m digging on this story like you would not believe. Chuck Dixon’s run on the early issues of Nightwing were so good, accompanied with McDaniels artwork, I hearted it. Dixon and Beatty did a bang up job on the “Robin: Year One” storyline so I’m excited. Plus, I’m really hoping this means more Dick/Babs romance. Forget Starfire (this is to you Ben!) Barbara is Dick’s one true love. I’ve even devoted a small chunk of my original art collection to pieces that involve their romance. This book could mean more pages for my collection. Are you reading this hun? Nightwing McDaniel = really good present for your girlfriend.

Thanks for the hint… I’m sure every guy out there is going to run out and get Nightwing art for their girlfriend.

DANI: They should.

Yes, I hope they cram plenty of Dick/Barbara goodness into this flashback storyline to ease Dani’s pain as Dick reunites with the woman he was always meant to be with, Starfire, in the pages of Outsiders. This was the couple that defined a mature generation of readers, while Dick & Barbara were a cute nod to fans of the Batman TV show who grew up with awful delusions and the idea that Robin should say “Holy!” a lot. -Ben

And our new Superman IIIISSSSSSSSSSS….

Another sweet tidbit of knowledge from Newsarama:

On Friday, the Hollywood trades made it official; Brandon Routh will be Superman in the upcoming Warner Brothers movie directed by Bryan Singer. However, there was a matter of some money on the line between Mark Millar and Ain’t it Cool News’ Harry Knowles in regards to who would wear the tights.

So the story goes that Knowles and Millar made a bet about who would be Superman. With this relative nobody at the helm in Brandon Routh – I think we’re going to see a good DC movie for the first time in years. Also, I give kudos to Knowles & Millar for donating to a worthy cause while keeping people thinking about this movie.

DANI: So we have a Superman. Woot! And good for Millar and Knowles for donating some money to a good cause. Double Woot! Now if only we could be guaranteed a good script and a good movie. As long as there aren’t any giant spiders in it, I think we’re fine.

So, I think that’s all. This has been another installment of DC News & Views – this time with 50% less information, with 300% more people. That’s what we approve of around here. Quantity instead of quality wins everytime. So I’m James Hatton saying g’bye everyone. Anyone else want to say bye?

DANI: I’m finished already. But I only wasted about a half hour of my class time. Damn you DC for not having more news. I guess I’ll be signing off to. Bye Bye kiddies, it’s been fun.

Tim…please never ever go away again…-Ben
