Welcome to the Marvel Handbook at the Nexus. Sorry about last week Daron old buddy. I was sort of in a rush.

What happened last week? Did I miss something?

Well either way I’ll let you get a word in.

Uh…ok.

Mike emails

Hey,

I think I may have asked you this years ago on the Wizard boards, but I’ll ask again.

In the early 90’s, there was some annual where Spider-Man met up with a new mutant hero. . . Squirrel Girl. Her powers? She could talk to squirrels. Yup. And somehow in this comic, she defeats Doctor Doom. Anyway, what comic was it? I think it was an annual, and written and drawn by Steve Ditko.

Actually, she didn’t meet Spidey, it was Iron Man. The appearance was in Marvel Super-Heroes Volume 3 #8. And she was created by Steve Ditko as you stated.

You know…I’m sure most of you figure I’ll have some sort of comment on this one, and as much as I want to comment, I think I’ll just keep my thoughts to myself on this one… – The Overlord

Joonya emails

Howdy,

Your response to the Spidey/DD question got me thinking. We’ve all heard the story before. Hero meets other Hero. They have a misunderstanding. They briefly fight. Misunderstanding gets cleared up. They fight the real bad guy. This happens in all most every Hero/Hero meeting. But, can you give me some examples of real Good Guy/Good Guy knock-down, drag-out whoopins. I’m not talking about ones that say, D-Man vs. Beak To The Death!!! on the cover only to have a one panel stare down, then team-up. What I want is hot hero-on-hero action!!!

Thanks,

Actually, there are a few.

Spidey fought Hulk a few times for instance.
Wolverine fought Hulk
Thing fought Hulk
Wolverine fought Spidey

I’m noticing a trend here. Okay, Hulk is one hero that is misunderstood so much that many writers actually use him as a villain. There have been a few others but it would be hard to list them all. These are some of the better ones.

Joonya said: What I want is hot hero-on-hero action!!!

What the hell is… *clasps hand over mouth* *mumble* *mumble* *mumble*

Sorry about that, let’s move along. – The Overlord

Abdul emails

Hey Jim just read your recent column and the Ultimate Adventures series wasn’t necessarily “canned”. It started out as part of the U-Decide Debacle as a limited series that would continue if it beat Marville and Captain Marvel in sales but as later admitted by Quesada it was never supposed to be anything more than a limited series that he wanted to see published and that the whole U-Decide thing was a marketing stunt to boost sales for the critically acclaimed but poorly sold Captain Marvel. Despite it being written by uber-hack Ron Zimmerman I thought it was a decent read.

Ah yes the fan favorite U-Decide. It did give Captain Marvel a much needed boost, for a little while anyway..

As for why Bendis is writing Avengers is another matter and has nothing to do with Marvel asking him to pick up the title. His workload was already full at the time with them. What actually happened was at a recent Marvel summit between some of Marvel’s writers Bendis et all began shooting out ideas for the Avengers until the idea of a new team of Avengers came up and Millar was originally tapped to write the book. But Millar confided in someone I cant remember who that in his heart of hearts he didn’t want to write the book that badly and Bendis who claims to be a big fan of Avengers was quick to scoop up the title knowing he would have to forgo another book which happened to be Ulitimate Fantastic Four. Your Avengers lineup is incomplete as well your minus the quote on quote mystery character. BMB hasn’t revealed who he is and the only hints given have been the character has had a big time movie and that the item in his hands, nunchucks, was a clue. My guess at this point is Daredevil. All the so called satellite books coming together was another BMB idea to have a more coherent Marvel universe.

Actually, the roster is complete in a way. I was only asked the cover characters for issue #1, not a full roster. Bendis himself has said the cover is not the full roster. But we don’t know who else is on the team.
Here’s his picture:

Mystery Avenger

That does not look like Daredevil to me, but he could be in disguise. Hopefully we’ll find out soon.

I’ve also heard that the Iron Man in Avengers is not Tony Stark. I can’t say who it may be though.

But anyway heres a question for you whats your opinion on the whole Magneto affair thats coming up. It seems now that we got at least 2 Magneto’s running around as the Mags in Excalibur may or may not be Magneto with the sudden appearence of Magneto in old uniform in his underwhelming appearence in Avengers. Plus what do you think of
Scarlett Witch being the villian?

Can you be sure it’s two different guys? Here’s the thing, Mags in Avengers says Charles told me it was you. Also, there’s a theory that the Avengers where frozen by Professor X’s telepathy somehow. Now I’m not sure on the Prof X thing. I do think it was the same Mags that’s in Excalibur. Read Avengers Finale

We’re going to find out and I think it’s going to lead to the next big Marvel event next year. Here’s what I’ve heard: House of M. Wanda vs. Marvel written by Bendis. This is a hot rumor going and I’m betting we get everything answered during it.

BL emails

Mr. Trabold and Overbearing Overlord:

Call me Jim, my Grandfather is Mister Trabold.

And it’s MR. Overbearing Overlord. – The Overlord

I have a confession to make. I USED to like Liefield’s artwork. However, due to the fact that it has not evolved one single solitary iota since he began on New Mutants, and those X-Factor issues that he did 15-16 years ago.

Now, of course last week I wrote in that I cannot follow a damn thing that is going on in the X-Force mini, and I have contemplated on it, thinking that maybe it was just me; maybe I was just skimming through it; maybe it could be a great piece of comics literature.

The Conclusion of all of this thinking and whatnot?

It still freaking sucks.

You’ve got to love the Rob Liefield bashing going on. I love our readers, Daron. Any bashing you want to add?

Well I believe I gave Rob a good bash on the head last week when BL wrote in, so I think I’m good. I do however feel sorry for BL here, he’s apparently suffered a lot of trauma in his life. My suggestion, seek counseling…QUICKLY!!! And if you can’t afford that, pick up the first Gotham Central trade, the wonderful art and stories in that book should start to reverse the damage Rob has caused you over the years… – The Overlord

And I am totally digging what Joss Whedon has got going on in Asonishing X-Men. You cannot help smile a little at some of the stuff that they have going. It’s suspenseful and fresh. The artwork I am a little apathetic for, but the plot is really what people read X-Men for anyways. And I have yet another gripe: (“Shaddupp, BL! This isn’t your column! This is on IP!” You shut your mouth fatboy!)

I agree, JW has made Astonishing the X-book to read. It’s the best X-Men title out today. It makes you remember the old days. Anyone who’s not reading it go buy it now.

My gripe, much like alot of other fanboys, is the fact that Wolverine, with the addition of New Avengers, will be an active member of a team in 4 monthly comic books, not to mention the fact that he has his OWN BOOK. Am i wrong on this?

Does wanting Wolverine on ONE TEAM in ONE BOOK make me a bad person?

No it doesn’t make you a bad person. How about making him appear in two books? Wolverine being one and Astonishing the other. JW is writing a great Wolvie so he should stay there.

You know, one has to wonder who Marvel is placating with all these Wolverine appearances. When we were in Chicago at the convention, people groaned everytime they saw Wolverine in a different book. It seems apparent that it’s not the fans who want him in every book, so what the hell is the deal?!? – The Overlord

I bet that if Marvel had a gustapo, and they intercepted this email, they would come and ‘Pick Me Up’ for a little ‘Re-Education’ about how Wolverine should be used…

No one intercepted it, yet. *Looks behind him* Oh hi Joe. No he’s not ripping you for putting Wolvie in every Marvel title. No, he’s not. Just let him go. BL run for your life man!!!!!!!!

Thanks again fellers,

You’re Welcome, BL

Yup, yup and $h!t! – The Overlord

2) In spiderman I can think of only 4 villains that spiderman created or were created to destroy him, can you think of anyone else?

scorpion
green goblin (harry osborn)
carage
Vemon

Spider-Slayers. Alistair’s and Spencer’s robots (Jonah had Spencer built the first ones and Alistair wanted revenge in the end for his fathers demise.)
The Jackal (Gwen’s death caused him to go after Spidey)
Carrion (created by Jackal to after Spidey)
Doppleganger (double of Spidey)
Grim Hunter (wanted revenge for death of Kraven)
Grizzly (created to go after Spidey)
Headsman (created by Norman to go after Spidey)
Human Fly (created by Harlan Stillwell to destroy Spidey)
The Jury (Created to go after Venom and Spidey)
Kaine (being his clone it fits)
Lightmaster (Spidey gave him his powers)
Mysterio (most know his origin by now)
Shathra ??? (we’re not sure but might be connected to Spidey’s origin)
Spidercide (yet another Spider-clone)
The Thousand (used Spidey’s origin for own creation)

3) How many times has jean gray been killed and what issues.

Let’s see, Jean really only dies once. Yep, once.

Here’s what makes everyone think it’s more:

Uncanny X-Men #101 (she’s put in cocoon and replaced by Phoenix Force)
Uncanny X-Men #137 (Phoenix Force destroys itself making everyone think Jean is dead)
Uncanny X-Men #168 (First appearance of clone: Madelyne Pryor)
Fantastic Four Vol.1 #286 (returned to the living)
X-Factor #38 (Death of Madelyne Pryor her clone)
X-Man #5 (Return of Madelyne Pryor thanks to Nate Grey)
Cable # 76 (second death of Madelyne was revealed)
New X-Men #150 (Jean dies for the first time supposedly)

But fear not, I’m sure once she’s back, we’ll see her croak (or supposedly croak) again. – The Overlord

Wasn’t the The Ultimates supposed to be shipping soon, or has it been
pushed back yet again.

Check your local comic shop the week of December 1st.

And with Millar taking some time off after his contract ends at Marvel what’s going to happen to his titles, more importantly The Ultimates?

His contract won’t end for a little while so don’t worry too much about your favorite titles. Wolverine by that time will likely have a new writer, Ultimates may get a fill in writer and any other title could have a new writer or fill in.

Well, there’s another action packed edition of the Handbook for everyone. We had a lot of X-related questions; the mutant issue of the Handbook, I guess. You got anything to add, Daron? I’ll let you sign off old buddy.

Actually, I think I’m good this week. Everyone make sure to check back with us next week, and keep sending in those emails. Later!

Before I sign off myself, there are a few things for everyone:

First: Amazing Fantasy will continue and fans get to pick the new character out of four choices so go check it out Here.

Second: I’d like to thank everyone who wrote to me, hoping I get better. I feel a lot better. Your all great fans and I really appreciate everyone emailing me.

Third: X-Men The End issue 5 will be done next week but after that the series will be monthly so anyone else that has projects like this for me email them. I’d love to do a few good bio series. It reminds me of the real Marvel Handbook.

Forth: A few people want me to do another round of tournaments for the Handbook. I’m not going to rule them out. They can be fun and interactive, so don’t worry we will do them again. I really want to focus on Q&A for a while. If you want though, send in some ideas for new tournaments.

Final thing till next week; Read of the week:

Avengers Finale (Any Avengers fan will enjoy this one).

Reporting from the Marvel Universe I’m Jim Trabold. Have a good week and see you again next issue.
