Romo's World: The O.C.-Episode 3

Archive

Previously on The O.C.:

Marissa making out with D.J. the yard guy, and Ryan seeing the whole thing. Then Ryan’s confrontation with Marissa in regard to her lying about being single. Set’s comic book club and him meeting Zach, followed by Seth seeing him kissing Summer. Then Summer denying Set’s attempt to get back together and lastly we are shown Caleb getting arrested.

Wow that’s a lot of “previously on” stuff. I guess the people from Fox are worried maybe that with the ratings down they want to allow people to jump back into the show without feeling like they are totally lost.

Cut into the front page of the newspaper with a big picture and story about Caleb’s arrest. It’s Ryan, with his newfound brain, reading the newspaper. Seth asks Ryan if he did the right thing cutting his hair? Seth is getting all vain about his appearance. I thought Seth hated the O.C. because of people like the person he is becoming? Well Ryan is more concerned about Caleb being arrested and asks Seth how he feels about it. Seth however is still obsessed with his new ‘do. Seth then realizes all he thinks about is himself, just as Summer suggested when she rejected him. Seth declares he will from this day on be a new Seth Cohen, a less selfish Seth Cohen. One of the metaphors he uses to describe how he will be less selfish is, “more pitching, less catching.” So we now know who the dominant male in the Seth-Ryan relationship is; not that it wasn’t obvious before. Seth has been doing all the “catching” and Ryan has been doing all the “pitching.”

Intro

Sandy is in his car driving Caleb. Caleb is upset about sleeping a night in jail. Sandy takes a shot at Julie, implying being in jail would be better then spending a night with her. Sandy tells Caleb that he will have to get his partners to agree to take on Caleb as a client, which may be hard because Caleb isn’t the ideal client. Caleb asks why they wouldn’t want him as a client, Sandy says because he is guilty. Huh? I thought lawyers only cared about bank books not guilt. Sandy tells Caleb to step aside as CEO and put Kirsten in charge of the company.

Off to high school and the introduction of the new redhead. She arrives in older car that looks to be on its last legs. She is given a nice taste of Newport by the welcoming crew of snobby girls who make fun of her by implying she should be embarrassed for driving the car she showed up with.

The boys are at the school’s version of Starbucks. Seth is trying to out his new selfless persona and failing badly. Seth notices that The Walkmen, a band Summer likes, is playing at a local club called The Bait Shop. Seth decides that as per his NEW Seth Cohen he will get tickets for the concert and give them to Summer and Zach. Ryan turns around with his coffee and spills it all over the new redhead, who has yet to be named. Ryan reaches around to get napkins and bangs her in the nose. Then he tries to make it up for her by cleaning up her spilled purse but this girl is not too impressed with Ryan and leaves before he can do more damage to her. Ahh”¦star-crossed lovers, or some crap like that.

Back to Casa Cohen with Kirsten and Sandy convincing Caleb to step down as CEO.
Julie arrives at the door and claims, “As soon as I saw the paper I came right over here.” Yeah right!! She tells Caleb that “we are partners” and, “What can I do?” Julie suggests several things she can do to help but Caleb tells her that Kirsten is taking care of all those things. Caleb then tells her that she could get some groceries for him. OH MAN! That made my day. If only he had said “hey I have some shirts that need ironing too.”

Now we head over to see Summer and Marissa discussing their lives. Summer wonders aloud if Zach is perfect. It comes out that Zach is a congressman’s son. Marissa prods Summer with some questions in an attempt to figure out if she really likes Zach or still likes Seth. Zach comes over and admits that he reads 4 papers a day. I think him and this guy Rob from my news reporting class would get along brilliantly. Summer decides to invite Zach for dinner to meet her parents. I would say that is game, set and match. Zach has won over Summer.

In physics class Ryan shows up late and finds the only seat open is beside the redhead whom he previously assaulted with coffee and his elbow. As he is walking around her to get to his seat he bangs her in the head with his bag. The teacher reads out the lab partners for the year and the two discover that they have been stuck together. We also are finally introduced by name to the cute redhead, Lindsay Gardner. I would like to announce that I am officially the first member of the Lindsay Gardner bandwagon.

Off to the boys on the boardwalk. They are headed to The Bait Shop to get tickets for the show. The place is empty except one girl who does not responding to them because she has headphones on. Seth taps her on shoulder which results in her twisting his arm. Alex is the name of this new girl. She informs Seth that the tickets have sold out for the show. Seth finds out though that if he works at the club he gets free tickets. He tells Alex he wants a job and points out the Help Wanted sign. Alex mentions he can start the job right now and gives him a mop to go clean the urinals. She lets it slip that the owne’s name is Nat. Coincidence that Nat was the name of the guy who ran The Peach Pit? I think not. Nice inside joke boys.

A word from our sponsors.

At the Cohen household Ryan is studying while Sandy is looking over what seems to be legal forms. Ryan complains to Sandy about his physics class but says it’s not the material just a student (eg. Lindsay). Seth is in pain from his manual labour job of cleaning toilets at The Bait Shop. Kirsten is obviously stressed out with her father being indicted having created more problems for her. Seth tells his mom that he is concerned about Caleb. He asks if they would lose company or house if Caleb is convicted. The parents don’t answer him and are upset at his questions.

Over in the mansion that corruption built Julie tells Marissa that everything will be fine. That she will hold family together. Marissa tells her mom that she doesn’t care. In fact she wants Caleb to go to jail so that her mom is homeless and she can go live with her dad. Wow the contest between Marissa and Julie as to whom is the bitchiest woman in Malibu is really heating up.

Back to Ryan in physics class. He does his best to avoid contact with Lindsay. He asks her about the lab report they are supposed to work on together. Lindsay tells him she has already turned in lab report but put his name on it. She informs him that she transferred to Malibu so she could get good marks and get into Harvard. She tells Ryan to be happy with his “A”. Ryan decides to tell the teacher that he didn’t contribute to the assignment and asks if they can change partners. The teacher denies the request and gives them an additional assignment.

At The Bait Shop Alex is lifting several trays of glasses and trying to get Seth to help but he is too self obsessed, he finally snaps out of his self-obsession and helps her. Alex asks why he is so interested in getting tickets for this show. He tells her the truth. Alex says that this is pathetic but sweet. Seth finds out that Alex is only 17 even though she acts and looks much older. It turns out she has been kicked out of multiple schools. She gives Seth his tickets. Alex warns him that Summer will see right through this game

Now we get to see Kirsten at office fielding calls for people looking to speak to Caleb. Sandy comes in to inform her that he got fired/quit from the firm because of him representing Caleb.

Summer is in her room watching The Valley, which just happens to be on between 8 and 9 on Thursdays. Seth shows up. He gives her the tickets and tells her that the tickets are for her and Zach. He claims he just wanted to do something nice for her.

Now some more commercials.

Over on Jimmy’s yacht Marissa is visiting her dad. She tells him all her problems in a quick concise run down in case the viewer hasn’t been paying attention. Julie comes to pick her up and Marissa makes a snide comment about going back to the ‘gulag.’ Jimmy asks Julie, “You gonna divorce him (Caleb) and take his kids?” TAKE THAT!! Julie complains that Caleb only listens to Sandy and Kirsten. Foreshadow warning. Jimmy says that the Julie he knows wouldn’t put up with that. Oh Jimmy you just have to stir the pot eh!

More physics studying for Ryan. Lindsay tells him she has already finished. She decides to stereotype Ryan as the typical snobby rich boy. He tells her that he transferred in from Chino last year is just like her and that the people here are not as bad she assumes. He suggests she try to make friends. Her response is “I’m not here to make friends.”

Zach and Summer are getting ready to go to the concert. Zach figures Seth wants to get back together with her and that his “changing attitude” is an attempt to get her back. After she balks at a question of whom she would choose between the two of them he tells her to go to concert alone so she can figure out if she still has feelings for Seth.

In Casa Cohen Sandy opens champagne to celebrate his quitting/firing. Caleb announces that he will be stepping down and appointing a new CEO. He tells Sandy and Kirsten that he will be appointing Julie as CEO of Newport Group. It is obvious that Kirsten is not too pleased with this decision.

Off to the concert at The Bait Shop, The Walkmen are playing. They seem to be some sort of Alt-rock band, I take it they are a real band but I have never heard of them before. Seth is at the bar already with Ryan. Summer shows up alone telling Seth that Zach has other plans. Seth shows her to the very VIP seating he has saved for her.

Ryan has left the bar and is on the boardwalk. He sees Marissa sitting on bench. He goes over to say hi. They talk about Summer and Seth and if they should get back together. Ryan asks if she wants to go see the concert. She asks if he likes the band. His response is, “I like Journey.” I played this over about 5 times to make sure I heard this correctly. I think someone who works for The O.C. is really obsessed with Journey as they had it as the intro for the website. I wonder if Seth with start listening to “Don’t Stop Believin'” in reference to Summer? I for one hope so.

Now back to the old folks of Malibu. Caleb and Sandy are arguing about Julie being appointed over Kirsten. Blah! Enough already!

Back at The Bait Shop Seth and Summer are sitting upstairs hanging out. Seth explains why he chose these seats for her based on what she likes. Alex comes by to say someone has puked in the bathroom. At this point Seth tells Summer he works at the club and got the job because it was the only way he could get tickets. He then kisses her. She pulls away and leaves the club. Seth chases her out of the bar. He tries to apologize and explain. He then admits that maybe he can’t be just friends with her. Summer walks away and says that this is it for us.

Once again a word from our sponsors.

Seth has awoken and is tired and feeling like an idiot. He is debating what went wrong. Ryan has no time for Cohen’s problems as he is late for a meeting with his lab partner.

Over to the rest of the house and Kirsten is looking very upset. Sandy comes to comfort her. Now I am really mad. I don’t like seeing Kirsten upset. Kirsten is the one of the hottest MILFS on TV. Besides that she is from my hometown, went to the same high school and university as me. I think it is time I take Julie for a visit to a pig farm if you catch my drift. She tells Sandy that she isn’t going back to office and she will not suffer Julie as her boss.

Back at Caleb’s mansion Marissa is lying on her bed. Seth has come over for a visit. Reaction: That’s very odd? He tells Marissa that since Ryan is gone and he has no one to talk to that he will talk to her about his problems. She seems bored and more then happy to have someone to talk to. Marissa tells Seth to apologize to Summer but really doesn’t give him much advice. They each ask each other where Summer and Ryan is. According to Marissa, Summer is at the country club with her father and according to Seth, Ryan is at school studying. Once again we are obviously being set up for something later, eg. Marissa seeing Ryan with Lindsay.

Over in the Cohen household Kirsten is relaxing by the pool. Caleb comes over to talk to her. Sandy jokes about supervised visits between the two of them because Kirsten may kill Caleb. Caleb apologizes to Kirsten but tells her he isn’t going to change his mind claiming he is doing this to save his marriage. Caleb then appoints her CFO (Chief Financial Officer) as a way of getting her to change her mind.

Now we are shown Ryan and Lindsay at school working on the lab assignment. Lindsay tells Ryan that, “you didn’t do a bad job.” She later admits that she owes him an apology which she reluctantly gets out. Marissa walks by the room and sees the two of them together joking. She leaves without saying anything, looking sad and no doubt wondering where her hip flask is. During the joking around between Ryan and Lindsay he criticizes her spelling which gets to respond saying she was using the Canadian spelling. What she MEANT to say is she was using the CORRECT spelling.

Now that we have seen one person get crushed time for another. Seth has gotten dressed up and gone over to the country club to talk to Summer. He sees her at lunch with her dad and Zach. They seem to be having a good time. Summer puts hand on Zac’s hand. Seth leaves with his tail between his legs without anyone knowing he was there.

Seth runs into Marissa on what seems to be her favourite bench, hence to be dubbed “the bench of loneliness.” He sits beside her and makes a comment on how they are the two loneliest people in Newport. So are they setting up for these two to hook up? Now that would be weird. I doubt it though.

Next on The O.C., which will air in two weeks thanks to the American Thanksgiving. Mmmm”¦ Turkey.

Ryan asks out Lindsay on a date, she says yes. But then realizes that he asked her out for Seth not for himself. Seth and Ryan go on a double date with Alex and Lindsay as Ryan is interested in Alex.

Thoughts:
So is Lindsay now the cutter, hopefully not as boring, Gabriel Carteris of the show?

I like her, she is a nerd, redhead and while some bitchy tendencies somewhat normal compared to everyone else in Malibu.

How long until Kirsten and Julie get into a cat fight? How long until Kirsten pulls a desperate housewives and starts to show some skin in an attempt to get rating up (hopefully soon)?

This was a pretty good episode. No D.J. helped out. I like the two new girls. I am still not sure about Zach yet. He seems too perfect which no doubt means he is either gay (but they did that already with Luke’s dad) or has some sort of mental breakdown because there is too much pressure on him to be prefect (the Jesse Spano syndrome).
