What can I say about Ultimate X-Men. It was fine. It was not remarkable. It was a perfectly serviceable comic book. I enjoyed it for the 12 minutes I took to read it, and then have since forgotten about it until I started to write this review.

Brian K Vaughan is a very good writer, far better than I will ever be, but I just haven’t been as excited about this book since Millar and Bendis left. Yeah, they are two of the “hot” writers these days, but you know, Vaughan is too. But while Millar was interpreting the history of the X-Men again, and Bendis was doing his interesting character stuff, it seems like Vaughn is simply telling X-Men stories.

And that’s not a bad thing per say, there is just nothing really special about it. They are good X-Men comics, but they just don’t seem all that different than the regular marvel universe X-world.

But onto this issue. It’s always nice to see a Kubert on this book. That’s all I’m gonna say about the art. Any Kubert always makes a book good looking, and this was no exception.

So the von Stuckers took Rogue and Gambit wants to get her out. And so do the X-Men. But the X-Men think Gambit is one of the bad guys…misunderstandings ensue.

There is a nice fight between Wolverine and Gambit, but so what? It’s not like we’ve grown attached to Gambit quite yet, so we don’t really care about him.

There is some neat stuff happning, very soap opera-esque, but that’s basically what the X-world always has been, a soap opera with super powers.

So in the end, the good guys won, and we really didn’t think it was gonna happen otherwise. And then there is that downer of an ending. I don’t know how long Vaughan is on this book for. I’ll stay on, because while it’s not an exciting read all the time, it’s always entertaining.
