News on Mummy 3, X Files 2

– Various sources report today that The Mummy 3 will be happening, though without director Sommers behind cameras.

Universal is planning a third outing for their successful franchise, but couldn’t get Sommers to do more than producing. Stars aren’t a lock either. Rachel Weisz had mentioned after Returns that despite appreciating the experience, the role couldn’t bring her any farther. Brendan Fraser is also up in the air.

X-Files creator Chris Carter spoke to SFX Magazine recently, and commented on the long-awaited sequel to the feature film. Carter exercised caution in his comments, not wanting to step ahead of things and fuel unnecessary buzz. The movie will happen, according to him, but not by late December as previously expected.

“We are in negotiations right now. And because it’s a sequel, there are peculiar and specific kinds of negotiations that are holding us up. I think that there’s an appetite for it, but I think that it’s got to be good. People won’t just go and see anything. Whatever happens, I’m going to do something good that people will want to go and see regardless.”

No word yet on the storyline that will be used. One might speculate it will address the imminent invasion, hinted at in the series finale. The man himself won’t comment, except to say “Not a mythology one (storyline), for sure!”
