This issue opens upon a scene at a meatpacking plant. Two guys are carrying a carcass to a backroom. They discuss the proper etiquette for their task. It turns out that they are just delivering a meal to character than one guesses is the Hawk rogue, Lionmane. Sadly this is his only appearance this issue.

Next we cut to a deliver person delivering a package to Carter Hall at the museum. Since Carter is “out” Kendra signs for it. As she tries to figure out what it contains Carter appears. He inquires why she’s being so nosy, but she deflects by telling him to get ready for a party. Thus he goes upstairs and prepare for the event. Carter opens the package and discovers an ornamental figure.

Then we flash to Belle Reve prison where, as ironic as it sounds, Fadeaway Man makes an appearance.

We then go back to the museum party already in progress. Kendra and Carter grow close, when a Manticore appears and causes havoc. Carter dispatches the beast and then escapes to his room. He and Kendra change to their heroic identities and take to the skies, leaving Detective Grubs suspecting.

In the skies Carter tells Kendra how the statue drew the Manticore to them. They also discuss their bonded souls. As they fly into the night, a shadowed winged figure on a building they pass also takes flight.

Gray and Palmiotti have a knack for dialogue. It rings true and feels natural. Sadly the story leaves much to be desired. The issue falls flat, despite the intriguing use of Hawk foes from the past. But the line about “polishing your mace” is a side splitter.

Sook and Gray work very well together. Sadly this is their last issue as a team on this title. Sook’s art really captures the dark element of St. Roch. It also neatly suited the darker tone of the book. The Manticore is a nightmarish creature, and Sook makes it look as such. I wish he had a longer tenure on the title.
