Marvel Handbook

Daron old buddy I will say this much, I’ve been very busy with the Handbook. We’ve got plenty of content for this issue. I even had to save a few for next week.

That’s Excellent Jim. So I guess the readers have forgiven you for all your prior transgressions and what not. Either that or they all just want to talk to me…

Either way lets get to it.

Mathan posted

Here are some more questions, but feel free to save some for future columns. I’m not really pressed for answers.

Will do.

Marvel is full of characters with angst. Sue Storm has lost unborn children, Peter Parker lost his uncle. If you had to adopt the secret identity of a Marvel U character, who would it be and why?

Ohhhhhhhhhh good question. I’ve always wanted the power of characters but never thought about the responsibilities of their of secret identities.

You know this may be weird but I think I’d wish to be Steve Rogers. That’s right, Captain America. I know it’s a bit of a cop out because he doesn’t have all the hardships of some of the others but remember this is a man who when he first appeared was from another time trying to deal with the world of today. He’s also the ultimate leader. Almost everyone respects and listens to Cap.

I’m not sure about this first question. I have enough angst already, I don’t think I need a second helping from some two-dimensional character. – The Overlord

On the other hand, if you were to have a mutant power what would it be and why, and as a follow up what would you second mutation be?

Another good one. This one also may be somewhat weird, but I want Colossus powers. That’s right the metal skin. I’d be able to take bullets and kick some major ass.

As far as the secondary mutation goes, since I am Colossus I don’t have any way to attack other then hand to hand so if I had a choice I want some type of energy blast. Something along the lines of Bishop maybe.

I think it might be cool to have Multiple Man’s powers. Just think how much you could get done if you had an endless supply of dupes running around. Plus with the way he’s being handled now, he’s becoming quite useful in a fight… – The Overlord

Again, if you were a mutant, would you follow the path of Magneto or Chuck?

Chuck. Sorry but I’m more good then evil. Plus if it’s still me I know the lessons of comics. With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility.

Do I really need to comment on which way I’d lean with all that power? Yeah, didn’t think so… – The Overlord

Would you rather have a clone wandering around, a la Peter Parker, or have memory implants a la Logan?

I hate hate hate the clone saga but not to remember my past? That just isn’t fun either. Good choices there. How about I take the clone because they are unstable. They will die.

Um…considering that choice of power means I have LOTS of clones running around does that mean I default to the mind erasing thin?!? – The Overlord

If you could be a member of any X team from any era, what team would it be?

Hmm this one is interesting. I liked the Outback team myself the most. The team after Fall of the Mutants had some great members and some of the best adventures.

I honestly have no clue. – The Overlord

Are there any forgotten mutants, like Cloak and Dagger or Power Pack, that you’re surprised haven’t resurfaced?

Funny. Both of those groups are not mutant groups. Power Pack got their powers from aliens. Cloak and Dagger by drugs. Although Marvel has said it’s possible that Cloak and Dagger where mutants whose powers were just lying dormant.

As for your question I’m betting your meaning in a series. I’ll just say the team that hasn’t shown up again for some time that would not shock me would be X-Factor. I know they just had an X-Factor limited not long ago but it wasn’t the same thing.

Seriously, would Wolverine beat The Flash?

I’m the Marvel guy here. I’d go with Wolvie no matter what. He is the best at what he does after all. He’d find a way to beat Flash even if it’s in a drinking contest.

NO!!!!!!! – The Overlord

Matt emails to help some with Weapon X

Hey, Hey to Mr. Marvel and the Dark Overlord,

Hey guys, figured I’d pipe in again, this time about the whole Weapon X/Weapon Plus thing. The main thing that confuses people, I think, on this is that Each “Weapon” doesn’t really yield one result, but the process of getting that result. The inspiration for these programs (or at least Weapon II on) came from the WW2 notes of none other than one Nathaniel “Mr. Sinister” Essex and his experiments on prisoners from concentration camps.

The first program was the super soldier program. After experimenting with animals, the end result was Captain America once they moved onto humans. Apparently, the Weapon I program a.k.a. the Super Soldier program lived on, still trying to duplicate the results. This brought about Nuke.

Over the course of about 40-50 years, they got to Weapon X, originally Wolverine. This program was run by a long time Plus scientist known only as the Professor, alone with Dr. Cornelius Hines.

Eventually, Hines’s assistant, John Sublime (let’s not go into that long story right now), takes over the entire Plus program. While he’s busy working on Weapon 13, Fantomex, he and the rest of the Plus higher ups can the Ten program. The Professor then takes Ten on it’s own, and it seems then is when he starts to call it ‘X,’ not ten.

As it stands right now, Sublime still runs the majority of the main Plus program. Brent Jackson, former agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., runs Weapon X, which was flirting with a reunion with the main Plus program before Jackson took over. Malcom Colcord, former Ten MP and Jackson’s predecessor, is on his own with Maddison Jeffries and a LOT of sentinels, trying to get back in the game after Jackson’s coup. He’s also a little crazy, as he imagines Wolverine is helping him and giving him advice.

Here’s a list of all known Weapons:

I – Captain America, Nuke
II – IX – unknown
X (while still under Plus) – Wolverine, Sabretooth, Silver Fox, Maverick I, John Wraith
X (after split) – Garrison Kane, Deadpool
X (Under Colcord) – Sauron, Mesmero, Garrison Kane, Marrow, Wild Child, Aurora, Copycat, Agent Zero (formerly Maverick I), Maddison Jeffries, Washout
X (Under Jackson) – Sauron, Wild Child, Agent Zero, Chamber
XI – unknown
XII – Huntsman (from New X-Men 128-130)
XIII – Fantomex
XIV – Stepford Cuckoos
XV – Ultamaton (from New X-Men 141-144)

Hope that helps,

Matt, I know who the numbers where and the whole story. The problem still is Morrison made it more complicated then it should have been. See, your going on facts that we already knew. Morrison basically screwed the whole system up and was probably the worst thing to happen to the Weapon X storyline.

When he said the I-X where Roman Numerals it didn’t help anything. Being Nuke can’t be Weapon I. He’s super Soldier but not Weapon II. Heck Steven Rogers can’t be Weapon I either technically. The Black Cap thing makes that whole story out of whack. What Morrison did was just throw the facts at the wall and made them into his own little mythos and decided to throw out the bits that didn’t fit. The little facts with Black Cap (although a Captain America storyline may have dealt with that already) and a few others where just plan forgotten. Of course, Morrison had no right to mess with Cap’s origins. He wasn’t the writer of Cap at the time and didn’t ask permission to alter any history on the Super Soldier Serum’s past. This is why I think the Morrison storyline wont stand for long.

I like your numbering it’s very accurate. Thanks for the help Matt.

I feel I should comment, but just can’t find the energy. Thanks for the email though Matt. I didn’t know half the people you listed were ever part of the Weapon program. – The Overlord

The Dark post on the board

I thought I’d throw some questions at you. Almost like I matter!

You matter here.

I read an old X-men comic not too long ago and it had Cannonball and Gladiator fighting basically in a toy store during the holiday season. Gladiator is the marvel equivalent of Superman and has traded blows with several big name teams and characters throughout Marvel without being scratched. How the hell did Cannonball seemingly get the win?

If you know Gladiator you know he needs confidence to use all of his strength. Cannonball’s powers deflected most of Gladiator’s punches and of course Gladiator lost confidence. Sam got in a sucker punch to end the battle.

Wolverine is frickin’ everywhere. I was wondering who you would replace him with in X-Men and the new Avengers, if he wasn’t around?

On X-Men likely it would be Kurt Wagner since he’s got tons of fans out there.

On Avengers Spidey already joined so can’t say him I guess, lol. Daredevil maybe if he’s not on the team. Punisher if you want to go the violent rogue route.

Personally, I’d like to see Sunfire return to the X-Men fold, so I wouldn’t mind seeing him replace Wolvie. And as for the Avengers, I think I’d like to see Black Knight back on the team. – The Overlord

I know Marvel and DC have characters who are very much alike, like the prior comparison of Supes and Gladiator. Who comes closest to being Marvel’s version of Batman?

Most likely Wolverine in popularity.
Detective wise and close to power is Moon Knight
Also Punisher in the loss of his family arena.

Also of course the Full JLA has duplicates in the Squadron Supreme. Nighthawk being Bats.

To me I’m thinking Bat’s closest replica in the Marvel U is tie between Black Panther and Daredevil. Neither of them have all of Bat’s traits, but between the two of them… – The Overlord

A super healing factor seems like a trait every mutant has lately, who are all the characters with one? I know Wolverine, Sabertooth, and Agent X have it.

Wolverine
Sabretooth
Agent X
Deadpool
Wildchild I think
Archangel now has a healing ability

There are a few others I can’t think of right now.

I remember it being said that Sabertooth and Wolverine were once part of a group of soldiers for the government, which led to their feud when Sabertooth killed the lady they were trying to protect and Logan had the hots for. I know Maverick was with them, but who else was a part of the team?

Silver Fox was also part of Team X. Part of the Weapon X program.

Umm… That’s all for now.

I’ll be here.

As will I. – The Overlord

Daron any final words?

Well that sounds a bit ominous…

I actually don’t really have much to add this week. I’d like to apologize to all the 144Anima fans out there. The servers were down all weekend, something we have no power over unfortunately. We will have a new strip up for you this week though.

That’s pretty much it for me. I hope everyone has a great week, and we’ll see you all back here next Wednesday.

Alright then my turn. Notes:

1. This weeks Marvel.com poll is on Blade villains.

2. Blade Trinity was great. I thought it had some of the best action sequences and fights of all the Blade movies. It also had a ton of comic references in there. King was funny and could really kick ass. Abigail also had some great action sequences. Of course Snipes plays Blade like the bad ass he always plays. Best of the bunch so far. Go see it. Oh and if your lucky you’ll see the preview of Elektra which looked cool.

3. Don’t forgot there’s a Marvel Handbook topic on the boards for questions if you don’t have time to email me.

Reporting from my corner of the Marvel Universe I’m Jim Trabold. Have a great week and see you again next week.
