Episode 1.12: Whatever the Case May Be
Airdate: January 5, 2005

Mysteries surround Kate, embattled with Sawyer over an impenetrable, salvaged briefcase, which apparently contains something (or things) known only to her. A backstory centers on Kate’s troubled past, and her ties to criminals and violence.

Promo pictures roaming around the web reveal that Kate may have been involved in some sort of bank robery (or worked there and ended up being caught in the action), which may explain why the marshall was chasing her.

Jack, Kate and Sawyer fight over possession of a newly discovered locked metal briefcase which might contain insights into Kate’s mysterious past. Meanwhile, Sayid asks a reluctant Shannon to translate notes he took from the French woman, a rising tide threatens to engulf the fuselage and the entire beach encampment, and Rose and a grieving Charlie tentatively bond over Claire’s baffling disappearance.

The cameras roll as Kate (Evangeline Lilly) and Jack (Matthew Fox) stare at a mound of dirt marked with a wooden cross. ”Why didn’t you just put him with the others when you burned the fuselage?” asks Kate. ”Because I needed to bury him,” explains Dr. Jack solemnly. Jack and Kate pull out some makeshift shovels and begin exhuming the dead guy, a U.S. marshal who was bringing fugitive Kate to justice before disaster struck. See, this marshal carried a wallet. And that wallet contained a key. And that key opens an impenetrable briefcase. And the contents of that case are important enough for them to endure this hellish process, which involves gagging, maggots, and a startling betrayal that the island gods want to keep hush-hush for now.

[The woman whose husband died] will be back. And this time, she’ll be the one coaxing someone out of a post-traumatic haze. One of the main characters we know and love.

A flashback will show us a gruffy handsome New Mexico resident named Jason who is not a model citizen.

Kate centric episode. Title comes from our source.
