Happy New Year all.
This week we have a really good amount of questions, so combined with the Mutant X stuff I think we have a pretty full issue, Daron.
Good, I was thinking you’d been slacking a bit lately…
I think we’ll stop the Deadpool stuff after this week, though we have a few to cover this week.
I find it amusing that almost all of the long running issues we’ve had here in the Handbook pertain to “Weapon X” characters. Let’s see if we can’t get a “big” discussion started on “non-Weapon X” or even “non-Mutant” character…

In 1996 during “the Crossing,” Tony Stark went from a playboy with a cool moustache to a teenage version of himself. Oh yeah, he also “died” in Avengers 395. In “Heroes Reborn,” Tony Stark went back to being a playboy with a moustache again. Please explain.
Actually you can thank Franklin Richards for that. He remade the heroes how he remembered them in the Heroes Reborn world. That included Stark and Wasp.
Wasp was changed back to human form and Stark returned to normal age.
Also, please explain “the Crossing.”
The Crossing and the Timeslide happed around the same time. It was Kang’s big revenge plot of the Avengers. He had Mantis and Iron Man help him try to tear the Avengers apart. He even used that door in the basement.
It was the last Avengers crossover before Onslaught: Avengers, Iron Man, War Machine, and Force Works where the titles involved.
During this time Wasp was changed into an insect, Iron Man died and the teenage version replaced him from the past, and Mantis returned. It was actually not one of the best story arcs. Also, both Yellowjacket II and Gilgamesh died in this storyline.
I think most Avengers fans equate this storyline to the Clone saga over in Spider-Man. For a really good Avengers story try and track down the “Marvel Elseword’s” The Last Avengers Story. It’s an excellent story with some outstanding painted artwork…a criminally underrated story. – The Overlord
Our old boss and Wizard writer helps on Deadpool Ben Morse emails
Deadpool is not and never has been a mutant, it’s a common mistake. As far as Dead Man Wade, Apocalypse did have some enhanced humans like Rex and Pierce working for him in AOA, so I’m sure Wade was ok with him.
Jamie Hatton could probably tell the full story better than I.
Happy holidays,
Happy Holidays, Ben. Thanks for the help.

Kevin’s right, Deadpool isn’t a mutant. He was given an “artificial derivative” of Wolverine’s healing factor by the Weapon X program.
As to why Dead Man Wade was around in AOA, well, there was a Weapon X program somewhere, because Logan got his adamantium. It’s possible he encountered the program earlier in that timeline for whatever reason, or the Dark Beast had some hand in it.
And there were a few instances of Apocolypse employing non-mutants. The Absorbing Man, Diablo, the Thing (616 Hulk), and Maximus of the Inhumans come to mind. Wade is just plucked into this group.
Thanks Matt
Man, Jim, you should make more mistakes. I think we get more emails for your corrections than for people actually asking questions… – The Overlord

hey Jim good work with the column as normal you know i check in pretty
often with ya. i too had noticed you said deadpool was a mutant and was
going to write in about it but hadnt but thought id write in after the
last guy to confirm that deadpool is not a mutant. he was in the AOA
series as Dead Man Wade and i know apocalypse only has mutant
Underlings or henchmen but i think it may have been an inconsistency on the
Writers behalf or you could just write it off as apoc letting him live for the
same reason he let murdock, dirigible aka kingpin, arcade, red aka
Norman osborn and the owl live as the marauders because they caused so much
damage to their own kind. like the other guy said he was just a human
Who got mixed up with weapon x as a last ditch effort to save his life. i
blame it on lazy editors and writers at marvel just like with
Juggernaut they seem to be confused on whether he was a mutant or not as well.
Thanks Abdul
I rest my case… but in case anyone else is wondering, Juggernaut is not a mutant. His powers are mystical in nature (aka the Crimson Bands of Cytorok – sp?) – The Overlord
But speaking on who is and who isnt a mutant whats the deal with
shatterstar? im confused as hell on his origin was he from mojoworld or was he just
some loony from the insane asylum?
What if I say he’s both. There was a little explanation about this in X-Force.
He’s actually Shatterstar from the future Mojo world reincarnated into the body of Benjamin Russell. He’s the real Shatterstar but Ben Russell as well.

A few questions:
1) I was reading through the Avengers – Ultron Unlimited arc and I noticed that Captain America was using some photon shield that could transform into a quarterstaff. I have absolutely no recollection of this device/weapon/shield in any other earlier or later versions of CA/Avengers (but I didn’t follow it that closely during that time period).
What happened to his old shield?
In Cap # 2 of series 3 he lost his original shield in the bottom of the ocean. He used a copy of his old WWII one for a time before changing to the new one.
Who created this new one and why?
He got the new one from Sharon Carter in issue #9 because he lost the other.
Why/when did he switch back to his old one (or a copy of it)?
He got his original back in issue 20, but it was broken. Klaw repaired it in Cap #22.
2) Who is the lamest Avenger to ever be on the roster (and participate)? And I don’t mean single-issue appearances, or honourary memberships like Jarvis, I mean 5 issues minimum of active participation in battles/storylines. Lameness can be determined by powers, ability or character.
Hmmmmmm, that means no D-Man. How about Gilgamesh? Sorry but he was no use at all. He wasn’t as strong as Thor or Herc and not as powerful either. So he was dead weight.
