Episode 2.08: The Power of Love
Airdate: January 13, 2005

After forgetting their wedding anniversary, Sandy Cohen (Peter Gallagher), with the help of Seth
(Adam Brody) and Ryan (Ben McKenzie), comes up with an unforgettable present for Kirsten. When they arrive at Newport’s The Bait Shop, Kirsten realizes Sandy and the boys have orchestrated a celebration, and when Sandy takes the stage for a serenade it becomes an anniversary to remember in THE O.C

The Cohens’ 20th wedding anniversary turns into a date that will live in infamy after they catch Ryan and Lindsey in a compromising position and Seth sneaking out of the house to meet Alex. Twice. While grounded. But neither of these crimes compare to what the boys pull when Sandy and Kristen try to steal one night to toast their marriage. Meanwhile, Summer fails to impress Zach’s mother, and Julie drives the final nail in Marissa’s fling with D.J.

After Caleb’s reveal, Lindsay and Ryan grapple with their relationship: Is Lindsay Ryan’s aunt or his girlfriend? Meanwhile, Summer meets Zach’s family and it doesn’t go so well. In the end it’s an anniversary to remember as Sandy Cohen surprises Kirsten with a serenade at the Bait Shop. But Marissa ends up alone as D.J. leaves Newport Beach.

Summer is introduced to Zach’s (Michael Cassidy) sister and mother. His sister, named Nelly, is in her twenties and is very political and well-traveled. His mother is an attractive upscale well-traveled liberal woman. Nelly’s talks about Pakistan and India go over Summer’s head. She is totally a fish out of water in this conversation and everytime she opens her mouth, she gets more embarassed (remember how Seth felt when he met Summer’s dad? That’s exactly the same). Seth goes to the Bait Shop to get his job back. A photographer takes pictures of Julie, Caleb, and Marissa. Julie says that this picture is how Newport will judge the family. Sandy seems to want to do something with Kirsten who isn’t sure she wants to leave Ryan and Seth alone. But Sandy has babysitters: two friends of his who are cops. Kirsten and Sandy go to a restaurant but she is as cold as ice. Alex and D.J. also appear.
