Letterman Plans Johnny Carson Tribute Monday Night

A scheduled vacation prevented David Letterman from celebrating the life of his late mentor Johnny Carson last week. Monday (Jan. 31) night’s “Late Show with David Letterman,” though, will pay tribute to Carson, who died on Jan. 23 at the age of 79.

Letterman’s guests on Monday’s show will include Carson’s longtime producer Peter Lassally as well as former “Tonight Show” bandleader Doc Severinsen.

Letterman was a long-time guest host for Carson on the “Tonight Show” and even after Jay Leno ended up replacing Carson and Letterman left for CBS, the two remained friends. Carson visited “Late Show” twice as a guest after his 1992 retirement from “Tonight.”

Leno saluted Carson last Monday, helping “Tonight Show” to an 11.2 rating, the fourth highest ratings of Leno’s tenure.
