The Botterm Dollar In Music 2005.01.31

Yeah, I’m a little late today. I drove to San Marcos (near Austin) and spent the weekend with my girl. It was great, thanks. I usually come home around four or five on Sundays, but for some reason I just couldn’t make myself leave this time. I ended up getting home WAY too late and only pulled about an hour of solid sleep before having to get up this morning and go to PT. Oh, and did I mention that PT was in the RAIN and that the weather was slightly below freezing? It’s strange to think that I’m a medic and I’m surrounded by medics, but yet we don’t even grasp the fact that spending time in the rain and cold is bad for your health, especially when mixed with running. Eric, was it like this when you were around?

All this bitterness might also have something to do with the fact that I’m horribly out of shape and haven’t done PT in two months. I’m going to do something about that, though. I’ve started a PT/Diet Log on my new website where you can keep up with my weight, diet, and stuff like that. I know it’s terribly exciting and you can’t wait to click over there and start reading, but at least bear with me through the remainder of this column.

TOP FIVE ITUNES SONGS OF THE WEEK

These are my most-played songs on iTunes over the past week.

1. Eisley — Telescope Eyes (Room Noises)
2. Iron And Wine — Such Great Heights (Garden State)
3. Ryan Adams — Wonderwall (EP)
4. Death Cab For Cutie — Sound Of Settling (Transantlanticism)
5. Derek Webb — I Want A Broken Heart (iseethingsupsidedown)

I MUST TAKE LEAVE, SIR

I’ve been hearing about Coachella for years, but never really made the effort to either go or even read about it. I hear it’s good, but I’ve always got something going at the time the festival takes place.

This year, however, I’m going. The lineup was announced today, and it’s like they took my iTunes playlist and picked the artists directly from it.

From pitchforkmedia.com:

Saturday, April 30th: Coldplay, Bauhaus, Weezer, Cocteau Twins, the Chemical Brothers, Wilco, Keane, Snow Patrol, Rilo Kiley, Cafe Tacuba, Doves, Sage Francis, Armin Van Buuren, the Raveonettes, Bloc Party, Mercury Rev, Fantomas, Hernan Cattaneo, Zap Mama, DJ Peretz, the Secret Machines, Jamie Cullum, M83, Ambulance LTD, Four Tet, MF Doom, Josh Wink, Amp Fiddler, Tiga, the Kills, Donavon Frankenreiter, Spoon, Boom Bip, Katie Melua, DJ Marky, Immortal Technique, Jean Grae, Razorlight, Swayzak, Radio 4, Buck 65, Eisley, the Sexy Magazines, k-os.

Sunday, May 1st: Nine Inch Nails, New Order, Bright Eyes, Gang of Four, Prodigy, Black Star, the Faint, Roni Size, the Arcade Fire, Roots Manuva, DJ Krush, Thrice, Junkie XL, M.I.A., British Sea Power, the Dresden Dolls, Miss Kittin, the Fiery Furnaces, Aesop Rock, the Perceptionists, Jem, Autolux, Sixtoo, Tegan and Sara, Stereophonics, The Bravery, Matthew Dear, Diplo, Subtle, Beans, Shout Out Louds, the Futureheads, Sloan, Kasabian, the Blood Brothers, Matmos, Wolf Eyes, Gram Rabbit, Smokestacks, Zion I.

I mean, is that not the GREATEST lineup you’ve ever seen for a festival? Coldplay, Weezer, Wilco, Keane, Snow Patrol, Rilo Kiley, Eisley, Bright Eyes, Arcade Fire, Sloan, the Futureheads?! C’mon, now. If I didn’t make plans to attend this festival I’d be a complete idiot. It’d be better if NIN wasn’t on the bill, but I guess it’s time for Trent Reznor’s appearance of the decade.

RANDOM JUNK

  • The stellar live music venue Curtain Club (Dallas, TX) is undergoing some legal trouble that they didn’t even know about. It’s unfortunate, too, because it’s probably the best live music venue outside of Trees that I’ve ever been to, and I’ve seen some amazing bands perform there.
  • I’ve got a few reviews in the pipeline, so look for those if you’re interested. Coming up will be new albums from The Vanished, Radiant, Eisley, The Mars Volta, and a few others.
  • If you didn’t read Gordi’s column today, you should. You’ll be at least 58% smarter once you’ve finished it.

    LATER

We really need to stir up the music news pot on the weekends so I’ll have SOMETHING substantial to report on for Mondays. I’ve pretty much tapped the well here, so I’ll wrap it up for another week. I’ll drop the link to my blog one more time just in case you missed it the first time. Stay tuned for all the special goodness that only IP Music can bring you.

    Oh — happy birthday, Abbey.
