Romo\'s World: These Things I Think

Archive

Sorry for this being a little bit late. I have been very busy with school stuff and other responsibilities.

Let’s check the mailbag:
Colin P had some interesting comments about Law and Order

It bugs me how every crime now is tied to a huge issue, which requires preaching to the audience by the actors (African diamond trade, Israeli-Palestinian conflict). It’s like a street hood never just has a mugging go wrong anymore. Ah well.
….
I still don’t like Green, and think they should have a lady Det. for Farina to partner with, and partner McCoy with a dude. Have a fresh new look to the show.

At first I was not in agreement with Colin’s point about most crimes being tied to a big issue but then I caught an episode of L&O:SVU, but I will get to that later.

I do like the idea of having a female detective and a male assistant DA.

Law and Order: Special Victims Unit

Based on my previous column I decided that I needed to try and check out the L&O spin-offs on a more frequent basis. Also I wanted to check in on how Dann Flore aka Captain Cragan was doing

This week’s episode fell into Colin’s complaint. It wasn’t a ripped from the headlines; it was more of “potentially ripped from the headlines.” The show revolved around a 16 year-old female celebrity who was rapped. This celeb is alleged to have drinking and drug problems along with being considered a slut.

Does this sound a bit like Lindsay Lohan or Britney Spears or any other number of girls. Incidentally the actress portraying the young starlet is none other then Maggie Grace who portrays Shannon in Lost.

A local shock jock, can you say Howard Stern, asks his viewers to get a pair of this star’s panties if they want to get on his show. Lewis Black from The Daily Show expertly portrays the Stern wannabee.

Well the story goes that a young fan of the shock jock sneaks into the celeb’s trailer and finds her passed out. He takes some pictures of her and then decides to take her panties off and then has sex with her.

While I was watching this episode Colin’s thought, “It’s like a street hood never just has a mugging go wrong anymore” was ringing in my ears.

Other things I noted about this show. I really liked the assistant DA in this show and by like I mean she is hot.

Overall the show was pretty good and I will most likely check it out more often but I would like to see some more street thugs committing crimes.

The Amazing Race

It is down to the wire with only four teams left. Sadly this week was a non-elimination leg. I really would have liked to see Adam and Rebecca be sent packing. Then again seeing those two scrambling to get money could be entertaining.

The couple I am rooting for, Kris and Jon, had a lot of troubles this week with cab drivers getting them lost. Luckily for them Kendra and Freddy chose vengeance over strategy. That couple chose to yield Adam and Rebecca because that pair and previously yielded them, even though Kris and Jon are tougher competition.

This is the first season I have watched from start to finish. I really think they need to revamp aspects of the show to have more strategy involved. There should be more yields and the yields should be anonymous.

I really hope the finale comes off well. If they have one of those instances where everyone gets bulked together because of an attraction not being opened. I know that might make things more exciting but when things like that happen it rewards the slow people and punish the teams that have worked hard to build a lead.

It will be interesting to see if the Freddy/Kendra and Hayden/Aaron alliance holds together for this last leg of the race. Hayden seems the type who will most likely screw over the pair. Aaron seems resigned to Hayden’s attitude and plays the passive aggressive role instead of confronting her.

I think of all the people on the show Kendra has changed the most. At the beginning she seemed rather ignorant towards local people and customs. However as the race continued Kendra’s attitude changed. By the time she reached Ethiopia she was fully embracing and becoming attached to the people she met. Not to sound cheesy but in many ways that makes her the biggest winner of them all.

State of the Union Address

What a WASTE of good TV time! I am sorry but unless the President is an entertaining spokesperson they should not take up valuable airtime, which meant taking away my Law and Order.

I don’t care if you are a fan of Bush or not, I don’t care if you are left or right wing but Dubya is not the greatest public speaker.

Clinton may be a liar, cheat, whatever else you want to call him but he is a great public speaker.

Sports Illustrated: Swimsuit Model Search

I taped this show for the lovely, talented Laura Waterhouse who does reviews on the show, check them out.

Well the one girl whom I would like to see in a bikini over and over again, Shannon, looked like she was not going to make it very far.

The model president guy, don’t remember his name, is a real prick. When the judges were debating who should stay and go former SI model Roshumba threw in her 2 cents. The guy basically told Roshumba that she is only a model and doesn’t know what she is talking about. Um…ok. If that is the case then why the F is she on the show in the first place?

Basically the show is centered around nitpicking these georgeous woman that pretty much any guy would beg to sleep with. Oh wait but during all this nit picking no one seemed to point out that Stacey, the girl who finished third, has the WORST eyebrows in the history of humanity this side of Peter Gallagher.

The girl dyed her hair blond but left her eyebrows brown. Come on! You are telling Stacey that “there isn’t anything special about her” but totally ignore the fact that Stacey looks like someone who got a cheap dye job.

House MD.

This week’s episode was great. The conflict between House and Eric Foreman came to a head this week. Foreman’s old boss came in town because of a conflict in the way House wants to treat a patient and the way his normal doctor, Foreman’s old boss, diagnosed him.

House didn’t guy the diagnosis if ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). He felt that was a death sentence and that before such a diagnosis should be made all other alternatives should be explored.

House eventually would violate the patients DNR (do not resuscitate) and be charged with battery.

During the course of the show Foreman was offered a job as a partner with his old boss where he would get paid three times as much as he is currently earning. This just incited Foreman to challenge House even more then he had been doing in the past.

In the end House was proven to be right and Foreman came back on board. Even if House is the best doctor in the world how can Foreman, who probably has huge student debts, comes from a poor family, turn down a higher paying job.

My one suggestion for the show I would like to see House fail completely and have the show end on a total somber note.

Carnivale

With Lost being gone for a couple weeks this has been my “go to” show.

Brother Justin continues to build is parish and his psychoness grows. He really went to town on the servant girl he brought in. I am really curious to see what is going to happen in the growing divide between Justin and his sister,

Meanwhile Ben Hawking continues his quest to find his father. Ben managed to find some other relatives. The hillbillies who kidnapped Ben last week turn out to be his cousins. Ben is brought to meet his grandmother who has special powers of sorts. The frail old woman managed to stitch one of Ben’s cousin’s mouth shut. The other cousins are all seemingly scared of the old woman.

Ben is told by his grandmother that his father, Henry Scudder, is dead. She also drops the bombshell that his granddad was good friends with Nathan Forest, the guy whom he co-founded the Klan with.

As he leaves his cousins tell him that upon the birth of his father his grandmother killed her husband and her other children and then clawed her eyes out. Yikes thems are some pretty big skeletons in the closet.

This show continues to be one that I enjoy quite thoroughly. I was worried it would not be able to sustain my interest this year but it has been much better then I expected.
