SLAYER’S SPORTS AND STUFF

Hi everybody! Welcome to another edition of Slayer’s Sports and Stuff and more importantly the ALL NEW College Hoops and Stuff! Here’s how it works. The world of college basketball is BIG. Really really really BIG! It’s scary how big it is. And at the end no matter how much of a college hoops fan you may be, it’s impossible to know about all 326 teams (and eternally growing). So, I made a little guide to help you out. Why? Because I love you. Plus we have alcohol and movies at the bottom! It’s like a free prize! I will go over the previous week of college basketball and all its ups and downs (not this week though, that starts next week). Then I will give you the guide. Here’s how the guide works.

1) I will list all the nationally televised games.
2) The numbers you see are their respective rankings in the followng order: AP, Coaches, RPI
3) ‘x’ means no ranking
4) Remember, AP and Coach rankings change every Monday!
5) The RPI rankings change 24/7, so look at them as simply approximations.
6) I will write a quick blurb about the game so you know what the deal is.
7) That’s it. I can’t make it to Ten no matter how hard I try.
8) I can say you will see it every Tuesday, and it will take you to Monday. But today is Thursday
9) I’m almost at ten!
10) WOOOOOO!

Let’s do it!
THROWDOWN THURSDAY
x,x,94: N.C. State vs. 6,6,3: Wake Forest 7:00/ESPN
The Wolfpack is in a slump, the Demons are in that ‘we have a lot to prove’ mode’. Could be a walloping if the Pack ain’t in top form.

x,x,138: Xavier vs. 21,20,19: Cincinnati 9:00/ESPN2
This inter-conference matchup was supposed to be much more when it was signed on but Xavier is in a rebuilding year. Cincy is coming off a two game losing streak including a 1 point upset by Charlotte.

MANIC SATURDAY
41,34,20: Notre Dame vs. 18.15,35: Pittsburgh Noon/ESPN
Notre Dame’s first game after the somewhat overhyped ‘upset’ against Boston. Pittsburgh is coming off a loss against somewhat surprising West Virginia. Should be an entertaining tough Big East game to wake up to.

x,x,101: Ball St. vs. x,x,86: Buffalo Noon/ESPN2
This will not be a an entertaining tough game to wake up to. Buffalo on National TV? Good for them! My Alma Mata! Wait a minute, I think you have to graduate from the school for it to be your Alma Mata.

20,21,17: Wisconsin vs. 1,1,2: Illinois 1:00/CBS
Illinois got a good scare from Michigan so expect them to be wide eyed for this game. Wisconsin got their buts kicked in last time they played and the Badgers age going to need someone besides Tucker and Williamson to contribute if they want to win this.

16.18,12: Oklahoma vs. x,x,56: Missouri 1:30/ABC(reg)
What a crappy year for the Tigers. They have lost last 8 out of 9. Whenever they want to wake up, now would be a good time to do it. Top 25 team, network TV, the works. The Sooners are in a bit of a slide and have been losing to all the other top Big 12 teams lately. Right now, they’re playing for a 2 or 3 ranking in the tournament and they have some catching up to do.

x,x,74: Florida St. vs. 6,6,3: Wake Forest 1:30/ABC (reg)
This should be a beatdown. The Seminoles are arguably the worst team in the ACC this year.

96: Richmond vs. 38,44, 83: George Washington 2:00/ESPN
A nice A-10 Matchup. The Spiders probably won’t make the tournament this year, and GW while in first place needs help in the RPI if they don’t win the tourny and want to make it as an at-large team. GW slapped them them last time the played 70-59.

208: Austin Peay vs. 154: Murray St. 2:00/ESPN2
I think when ESPN signed this game it was supposed to be the two top teams in the OVC. Didn’t work out that way. If you like the small school, mid-major thing: This is your game.

21,20,19: Cincinnati vs. x,36,44: DePaul 3:30/ABC(reg)
The classic CUSA rivalry soon to be Big East Rivalry. DePaul got killed last time they played, 83-54. I’m sure they remember it well.

48: Colorado vs. 3,3,1: Kansas 3:30/ABC (reg)
Do the Buffaloes have a chance pulling the upset? Probably not.

x,x,60: California vs. 44,x,49: Stanford 3:30/ABC (reg)
Well, it’s a classic football rivalry anyway.

13,12,20: Michigan St. vs. 82: Michigan 4:00/ABC
If Michigan plays half as well as they did against Illinois, the Spartans could be in trouble.

x,x,132:VA-Commonwealth vs. 33,31,62: Old Dominion 4:00/ESPN2
A chance to get a sneak peak at potential bracket buster, Old Dominion. Check out a guy by the name of Alex Loughton who could make waves in the Dance.

Washington State vs. Oregon 6:00/ABC(reg)
Two bad Pac-10 teams. What else is there to say?

x,x,85: Creighton vs. x.34,25: Southern Illinois 6:00/ESPN2
Unless Southern Illinois goes on a bad losing streak, they’re already in the Tourney. This is a good MVC rivalry and will be worth your time.

7,8,5: Duke vs. 33,41,31: Maryland 9:00/ESPN
The Terps are now playing for their tournament lives. It’ll be interesting if they lcan get out of the pack of four teams tied for fourth place. Duke is the last thing they needed right now.

HANGOVER SUNDAY
2,2,7: North Carolina vs. 19,14,15:Connecticut 1:00/CBS
The Huskies have some major injuries and this year and they have had a tendency to lose badly. They’ve been blown out a few times this year and this could be one of those games. It can also be one hell of a game though. Hey, it’s this or the Pro Bowl.

11,11,8: Washington vs. 130: Oregon St. 4:00/FSN
A very good Pac-10 team going against a very bad one. This could hurt.

x,x,94: North Carolina St. vs. 26,26,22: Georgia Tech 6:00/FSN
The Jackets are out to prove their win against Wake Forest wasn’t a farce.

BIG MONDAY
18.15,35: Pittsburgh vs. 8,7,14: Syracuse 7:00/ESPN
Two teams that have showed glaring weaknesses as of late and a lost a little aura. Still should be a thriller.

3,3,1: Kansas vs. 25,23,26: Texas Tech 9:00/ESPN
People are starting to take the Red Raiders very seriously after their win against Oklahoma. The problem is Kansas is still very pissed off about the loss to Villanova and they have been taking it out on everyone.

113: Air Force vs. x,33,117: New Mexico Mid/ESPN
A good chance to see NBA prospect, Danny Granger.

As for the 3000 games you will get on syndication, you’re on your own.
Let’s do some movies!

TOMBSTONE
This movie gets alot of chatter. People really love it. So do I. It has it’s critics though and rightfully so. But the ‘Wyatt Earp’ sub-genre of the American Western is a large and strange one indeed. Some are of the worst films ever (Doc, Wyatt Earp, Frontier Marshall) while others hail as some of the greatest (O.K Corral, Hour of the Gun, and My Darling Clementine). I always felt Tombstone falls somewhere in the middle. It could have been one of the great ones if not for the insane production issues that rivals Apocalypse Now. Alot of nutty things were going on behind the scenes and the result was the only film I know that seems both too long AND rushed. Yet in the past few years, there has been some debate as our generation has decided to revise history a bit and call this one of the great westerns. Why? Because it’s OUR Wyatt Earp movie with a bunch of actors that WE love. That’s why! Despite it’s glaring faults, it’s a personal favorite of mine and many others. SO THERE! Besides, Kurt Russel, Sam Elliott, Robert Mitchum, Bill Paxton, Powers Boothe, Michael Biehn, Charlton Heston, Stephen Lang, Michael Rooker, Billy Bob Thornton, Billy Zane, Thomas Church, and Frank Stallone in the SAME MOVIE!!!!! Hell, the film could have been about ‘flowers’ and it would have been good.

BARCARDI
The in-drink. Here’s some advice for you novices. Despite what the nazi clubs want you to think, it’s not good rum. It’s bad rum. Really bad rum. Now I do like Bacardi Golden Rum though, I do want to be fair. The best ‘accessible rum’ in the world is Myers. It’s the ugliest bottle in the world, but the best rum. So next time you’re at the bar or club say, “MYERS and Coke”. Not Barcardi. You won’t be disappointed. You’ll also get a little grin from the bartender because he will say “Man, this person knows rum.” Bartenders that respect your drinking habits will heighten the potential of buybacks by 83%! This is a proven fact.
