John Cena is getting a super push towards the main event at Wrestlemania 21, where it is expected that he will face Smackdown champion JBL for the title.
Cena has a reputation for being a genuinely nice guy backstage, and gets along with everyone. However, lately with the added pressure of a main event push, the time is now for Cena to improve his in-ring work. Even Cena himself was aware of his in-ring shortcomings, but lately it’s said that he hasn’t been participating in pre-event workouts.
In-ring workouts are common among green rookies and veterans alike, including Undertaker, Kurt Angle, Eddie Guerrero, Charlie Haas, Bob Holly, Rene Dupree, Heidenreich, Luther Reigns, Orlando Jordan, Kenzo Suzuki, and Akio, among others.
Cena has been pressured by his peers and management to do more workouts and train more to improve in the ring. “Once you get to this level,” says one wrestler, “the scrutiny goes up ten-fold. He wants to improve, but he should go in there and ask for suggestions and tips. He has to be doubling his efforts to improve at this point in order to avoid criticism from others.”
Cena does have a reputation for bringing home tapes of matches and studying them, both his and others to learn.
