Episode 11.15: Alone in the Crowd
Airdate: February 17, 2005

The inner thoughts of a housewife (Cynthia Nixon) robbed of her verbal skills by a stroke fuel this episode in which Kovac and Sam race to locate the cause of her condition before it worsens. Meanwhile, the search for a new chief resident leads Susan to a reluctant Pratt; Abby’s exemplary work on a patient attracts the not-so-professional attentions of Dubenko; and Neela begins to see the downside of living with Ray.

When a young mother of three (guest star Cynthia Nixon, “Sex & the City”) is brought into the E.R. with potentially fatal stroke-like symptoms, Kovac (Goran Visnjic) and Sam (Linda Cardellini) race against the odds to save her life. Knowing that a controversial surgical procedure is his wife’s only shot at a full recovery, a husband must make the unenviable decision to risk her life in order to save it. Meanwhile, Neela (Parminder Nagra) and Ray (Shane West) discover a dark secret when three ostensibly neglected children show up in the E.R.. Elsewhere, Carter (Noah Wyle) finds himself in the midst of a love triangle when Wendall’s (Madchen Amick) professions of love force him to either cut the ties in Africa or lose her.

Cynthia Nixon’s role is that of 35-year-old Ellie Shore, mother of three kids. After suffering from a stroke, she is rushed in the ER. Unable to speak, we hear all her thoughts from how she is feeling, to what she thinks of the staff, etc. Sam, Kovac, and Abby take care of her. Sam will inquire Abby about Kovac’s kids. Neela is still living with Ray. She treats a young boy who fell off a kitchen counter after reaching for a bowl. But the kid’s injuries are not only what makes him in trouble… that’s one strange family dynamic he’s living in. Dubenko wants to write a medical paper with Abby. A couple says they love one another. Lewis, Pratt, Carter, Wendall, Ray, Jake, Jane, and Morris appear in the episode.

Cynthia Nixon (“Sex and the City”) has signed on to guest star on “ER.” She plays a soccer mom who suffers a stroke and is rushed to the emergency room. Viewers get into her mind and hear her thoughts, as she is able to listen and understand, but not communicate.
