There are not many people who would admit to owning anything by Savage Garden.
And of these select few, even FEWER STILL are people that have testicles. Well,
I AM one of the few, the…um…proud?….the…..SAVAGE GARDEN FANS (with testicles)!!

While this may be blasphemous for a supposed metalhead like myself to say,
I think Savage Garden is great. I find their songs to be catchy, infectious,
and just plain GOOD. While most people would groan when "I Knew I Loved
You" came onto the radio, I found myself unable to resist singing along.
Oooh, it was bad. It still is.

This album contains at least 3 very well-known singles, namely "I Knew
I Loved You," "Crash and Burn," and "The Animal Song."
However, the album’s first track, the title track "Affirmation," is
probably my favourite. I defy anyone to listen to this song and not find themselves
nodding along to the beat. The lyrics are a bunch of self-affirming beliefs,
strung together QUITE randomly. For example:

I believe the sun should never set upon an argument
I believe we place our happiness in other people’s hands
I believe that junk food tastes so good because it’s bad for you
I believe your parents did the best job they knew how to do
I believe that beauty magazines promote low self esteem
I believe I’m loved when I’m completely by myself alone

See what I mean? From happiness, to junk food, to beauty magazines…but you
know what? Every time I hear it, I find myself nodding and saying, "Yeah
man! Right on! He’s right, you know." Well, maybe not those exact words,
but you get the idea. As pansy as the boys sound, their lyrics really hit home.
Check out this little nugget from "I Don’t Know You Anymore," a song
about love truly lost:

I don’t know you anymore
I don’t recognize this place
The picture frames have changed and so has your name
We don’t talk much anymore
We keep running from the pain
But what I wouldn’t give to see your face again

Jeez, just that line, "The picture frames have changed and so has your
name"…that’s just KILLER.

Of course, as a true fan, I also have their first album, the self-titled album.
That album also has a string of well-known singles, like "To the Moon and
Back," "I Want You," and "Truly Madly Deeply." While
I don’t like it as much as "Affirmation," it’s still a hell of an
album. Also, as a true fan, I always supported them every Tuesday night at the
local pub on Open Mic Night. Every week during my set, I would hammer out at
least one Savage Garden song.

Because even though they won’t admit it, drunks love Savage Garden. Even drunks
with testicles.
