The Redemption mini-series continues, with its clear emphasis on Matt Murdock as compared to Daredevil.

In this second issue, Matt further explores the complications of his case, and in a ‘stunning twist’, discovers that the confession made by his client was coerced by the country Sheriff’s office.

This isn’t a bad story by any means, but these scenarios with the obviously guilty client, along with the brave and courageous lawyer, have become pretty played out over time.

We know how the pattern will work. There will be complications and pressure on the lawyer (here being Matt Murdock) to ‘lay off’ the case. We’ve already seen the desperately grieving mother who is the ‘only one’ to believe in the innocence of her son.

Just when I thought this story couldn’t get any more clichéd, the abusive / violent father makes an appearance!

Whew”¦

Anyway, the story is mildly diverting, but no more so than an average Law and Order episode. My thoughts that this was attempting to be a mini that focused exclusively on Matt Murdock the lawyer rather than Daredevil were partially corrected by the final page, but I guess that will just be a matter of ‘wait and see’.

As a Daredevil completist, I’ll pick up the remainder of this series, but the only real question is whether Matt’s client will actually be innocent, or whether in a ‘shocking twist’ it will turn out that he has been guilty all along!

The art by Michael Gaydos is earthy, and well-suited to the tone of this mini. The dull tones of the colors by Lee Loughride also work well for the drab town in which this story is set.
