The issue begins with Hawkgirl and Hawkman quelling an armored truck robbery. It’s handled with great brutality. We then find “Mistress” Satana and two of her minions (a bear/human hybrid and tiger/human hybrid) in the office of a club. She informs the club owner that she’s effectively taking over his business. Then her Bear sidekick kills the club owner. Satana then instructs her minions to set things in motion for their ilk to grow.

After they wrap up the criminals, Kendra goes to Carter’s place and sees that he’s been sending money to the daughter she gave up for adoption. She’s touched which leads to a romantic interlude. Later Fadeaway Man pays a visit to a local psychic to pick up a package.

We then find Kendra and Carter in bed, and learn that Carter kept his cool and didn’t make any moves on her. He then takes off and goes on patrol. He finds Lion-mane chasing a girl in the park and the two battle. Lion-mane wins, and Fadeaway Man appears.

Fadeaway Man teleports Lion-mane away, and then explains how he got so adept at using his cloak. He then douses Hawkman with the drug he received from the psychic. He plans on killing Hawkman. But a savior arrives in the form of…Golden Eagle? To be continued.

Palmiotti and Gray have actually made Lion-mane and Fadeaway Man decent characters, so they deserve loads of credit for that. The revelation that Carter has been sending money to Kendra’s child was a nice touch, as was his not making moves on her. I’m really enjoying this storyline.

Bennett and Jose are doing great things on this book. Lion-mane looks very fierce. I’d like to see him on other books, as he’s now a force to be reckoned with. They also make Kendra look very alluring. The battle between Lion-mane and Hawkman was very well rendered. The book really does look great.
