The solicits name Seven Soldiers as “the most ambitious new storytelling venture in modern comics history.” That’s a helluva bold statement to make. And while it’s too early to make a full judgment on that, if this issue is any indication, we’re in for an amazing ride.

This issue sees six heroes (Vigilante, The Whip, Gimmix, Boy Blue, Dyno-Mite Dan, and I, Spyder) band together to stop the Buffalo Spider, a menace that Vigilante thought he’d stopped 100 years prior. The heroes have to head to Miracle Mesa, the so-called hunting ground of the gods, to put an end to the destruction caused by this creature.

Within that overly-simplified plot synopsis is an amazingly crafted story that really gives you a glimpse into these (mostly) unknown heroes’ minds. The seeds are also sown for the “huge, earth-shattering event” that will involve the new Seven Soldiers of Victory. If you didn’t know already, Grant Morrison is the master of complex stories with fascinating little intricacies that leave you drooling for more.

He also has a knack for surrounding himself with great artists. Williams’s art, along with Stewart’s colors, are nothing short of fabulous, as the art changes dramatically based on the scenery.

A great-looking book with a really cool story…that just so happens to be the beginning bookend to an epic year-long event by one of the comics world’s best storytellers…do you really need any other reason to buy this book? I didn’t think so.
