'Blue' Finale Can't Stop Idol

Despite ABC getting huge numbers from its ‘NYPD Blue’ series finale, FOX still won Tuesday’s ratings battle on the strength of American Idol.

FOX averaged a 12.7 rating/19 share, topping ABC, second for the night with an 8.0/12. CBS was third with a 7.9/12, while NBC was a non-factor in fourth with a 5.8/9. The WB had a decent night with a 3.2/5 and UPN had a better-than-average 2.3/3 for sixth.

Behind “American Idol,” FOX started the night in first with a 15.6/23. CBS’ “NCIS” came in second with a rating of 8.8/13.

At 9 p.m., FOX’s “House” kept much of the Idol’s audience with a 9.7/14. ABC grabbed season with the special “NYPD Blue: A Final Tribute,” which had an 8.7/13. Surprisingly, the premiere of Amazing Race could give CBS third place with a share of 7.5/11.

The “NYPD Blue” finale won the night’s final hour with a 10.4/17. NBC was second with “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.” The last hour of the “Amazing Race” premiere had CBS in third with a 7.4/12.
