ABC’s extensive promotion surrounding “Their Eyes were Watching God” paid off as the network took the Sunday ratings battle.
Overall, ABC managed an 11.9 rating/19 share for the night, ahead of second place CBS’ 8.2/13. NBC was in third with a 6.7/11 while FOX was way back with a 3.6/6.
CBS kicked things off in first with the 8.1/14 for “60 Minutes.” “Dateline NBC” was second with a 6.3/11, well ahead of “America’s Funniest Home Videos” on ABC. FOX got a 3.0/5 from episodes of “King of the Hill” and “Malcolm in the Middle” and took fourth. The WB was behind in fifth with “Charmed.”
At 8 p.m., CBS just held on for a 10.0/15 for “Cold Case,” edging “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” at 9.9/15. “Dateline” dropped to third for NBC, though its ratings improved. FOX remained in fourth with “The Simpsons” (5.4/8) and “Arrested Development” (3.6/5) . The WB’s “The Starlet,” which had a 1.1/2, was a disappointment for the upstart network.
ABC took over first at 9 p.m. with the first hour of the Oprah Winfrey-produced “Their Eyes were Watching God,” which did a 16.4/24. CBS was second with a rerun of “CSI: Miami.” On NBC, “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” had a 7.1/11 for a solid third. FOX stayed in fourth with a second episode of “Arrested Development” and a “Simpsons” repeat.
The movie continued to give ABC a big audience at 10 p.m. as well at 16.0/26. CBS remained in second with the 6.9/11 for “CSI: NY.” NBC’s “Crossing Jordan” was third.
