Former CBS News anchor Walter Cronkite suggested his successor, Dan Rather, stayed in the anchor chair too long.
Cronkite told CNN’s “Wolf Blitzer Reports” that Bob Schieffer, Rather’s temporary replacement, should have been anchoring the news sooner.
“He is, to my mind, the man who, quite frankly, although Dan did a fine job, I would have liked to have seen in there a long time ago,” Cronkite said. “He would have … given the others a real run for their money.”
Cronkite said it was out of respect and admiration that CBS kept Rather as the main news anchor for as long as it did.
