Networks can't 'Survive' Wednesday Ratings

A special ‘American Idol’ episode was not enough to overtake Survivor and CBS in the ratings in Wednesday.

CBS averaged a 10.5 rating/17 share, beating FOX’s 8.7/13. NBC was a distant third with a 5.7/9, while ABC was well behind at 4.6/7. UPN managed a 2.3/4 and The WB 1.7/3.

“Survivor: Palau,” 10.8/17, scored bif for CBS, almost doubling its closest competition on ABC (a Lost repeat) at 5.6/9. FOX was a close third with “That ’70s Show,” 5.2/8, and “The Simple Life 3,” 5.1/8. “American Dreams” only managed a fourth for NBC. UPN got a healthy 3.1/6 from “America’s Next Top Model,” while The WB was last with a “Smallville” rerun.

FOX assumed the lead at 9 p.m. with the “Idol” rerun of sorts, 12.2/18. Those ratings were considerably down from the normal Wednesday numbers. CBS aired a rerun of “CSI” and did well at 10.0/15. “The West Wing,” 6.0/9, advanced NBC to third, while “Alias,” got its worst ratings of the season 4.5/7.

At 10 p.m., “CSI: NY” clinched the CBS victory with a 10.6/18. A “Law & Order” repeat was second at 6.7/11 for NBC, while the “Wife Swap” spin-off “Vacation Swap” got a paltry 3.5/6 for ABC.
