ABC Not \'Desperate\' in Sunday\'s Ratings

A new episode of ‘Desperate Housewives’ combined with the series premiere of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ to sweep ABC to ratings victory Sunday night.

Overall, ABC averaged a 9.8 rating/16 share, just beating CBS’ 9.5/16. NBC was well behind at 5.1/8, while FOX had another disappointing Sunday at 2.9/5.

CBS began the night well as late-running NCAA basketball and “60 Minutes” captured a 13.8/25 rating. ABC was a distant second with the 5.5/10 for “America’s Funniest Home Videos.” NBC’s “The Contender” just beat the 2.5/5 averaged by “King of the Hill” and “Malcolm in the Middle” on FOX. The WB was fifth with “Charmed.”

At 8 p.m., CBS just held on with a 10.4/17 from “Cold Case,” edging ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” at 9.1/15. NBC’s “The Contender” scored a 4.1/7, fending off a repeat of “The Simpsons” and a new “Arrested Development.” which managed a 3.5/6 between them. The WB’s second hour of “Charmed” was left hopelessly in last place.

ABC took the lead in style at 9 with a dominant 14.4/22 for “Desperate Housewives.” CBS fell to second with the 7.7/12 for the first hour of the movie “Suzanne’s Diary.” NBC was a solid third with the 6.6/10 for “Law & Order: Criminal Intent.” FOX’s “Simpsons” repeat and the new “Kelsey Grammer Presents: The Sketch Show” remained in fourth. On The WB, “Steve Harvey’s Big Time Challenge” had a 1.4/2 for fifth.

Using its huge lead-in, the premiere of “Grey’s Anatomy” got a 10.0/17 to solidify the ABC victory at 10 p.m. NBC climbed to second with a 7.1/12 for “Crossing Jordan.” CBS’ movie slipped to third after 10.
