The combination of ‘Desperate Housewives’ and newcomer ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ was too much for the other networks as ABC took Sunday’s ratings battle.
Overall, ABC managed a 10.0 rating/16 share, well clear of CBS’ 6.6/11. NBC was third with a 5.7/9, soundly beating the 3.2/5 for FOX and The WB’s 1.4/2.
CBS started the night with the lead with a 6.7/12 for “60 Minutes.” ABC’s “America’s Funniest Home Videos” just topped “Dateline NBC” for second. FOX was fourth with the 2.5/5 averaged by “King of the Hill” and “Malcolm in the Middle.” On The WB, “Charmed” finished last with a 1.3/2.
At 8 p.m., CBS kept the lead with a 9.5/15 for “Cold Case,” though ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” had a strong showing with an 8.7/14. FOX’s “The Simpsons” and “Arrested Development” were well behind in third at 4.0/6 between them, which was enough to edge the pathetic 3.6/6 for NBC’s “The Contender.” A second hour of “Charmed” kept The WB in fifth.
“Desperate Housewives” scored a huge 14.7/22 for ABC at the 9 p.m. hour. NBC made the move to 8.0/12 for “Law & Order: Criminal Intent.” The first hour of “John Q” on CBS was third at 4.9/7. FOX’s “The Simpsons” and “Kelsey Grammer Presents: The Sketch Show” were a distant fourth 3.0/4 average. The WB stayed last with “Steve Harvey’s Big Time Challenge.”
ABC consolidated the win at 10 with a 11.4/18 for “Grey’s Anatomy.” NBC’s “Crossing Jordan” had a 6.5/10 for second. CBS’ movie was in third.
