ABC Stays Strong on Sunday

“Desperate Housewives” stayed strong, midseason sensation “Grey’s Anatomy” continued to build and the two first-year dramas helped ABC dominate the ratings competition on Sunday night.

Overall, ABC averaged a 9.9 rating/16 share, easily beating second place CBS’ 7.0/12. NBC was well back third with a 4.4/7, beating the 3.5/6 for FOX. The WB was fifth with a 1.7/3.

CBS started the night well with an 8.2/16 for “60 Minutes.” ABC was second with the long-standing “America’s Funniest Home Videos.” NBC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” clone “Home Intervention” could muster only a 2.9/6, tied with FOX’s average for “King of the Hill” and “Malcolm in the Middle.” The WB was last with a rerun of “Charmed.”

At 8 p.m., CBS stayed in the lead with the 8.8/15 for “Cold Case.” ABC’s rerun of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” was second with a 7.2/12. FOX did higher numbers than usual on Sundays with “The Simpsons” (5.0/9) and the season finale of “Arrested Development” (3.6/6). NBC’s “The Contender” continued to struggle in fourth, beating the 2.1/4 for “Charmed” on The WB.

ABC took command of the evening at 9 p.m. with the 15.1/23 for “Desperate Housewives.” NBC moved up to second with a 6.5/10 for “Law & Order: Criminal Intent.” The first hour of CBS’ movie “Don’t Say a Word” was third with a 5.4/8. FOX aired a “Simpsons” rerun and a repeat of the Pamela Anderson comedy “Stacked” and took fourth. On The WB, “Steve Harvey’s Big Time Challenge” was last with a 1.7/3.

“Grey’s Anatomy” reached a new high with a 12.5/20 at 10 p.m., more than doubling the numbers for CBS’ movie. An repeat of the “Revelations” premiere on NBC did a 4.9/8.
