More Reasons Why Being Deaf Sucks/Rocks

R.I.P. Bananas

There has been a lot of feedback about last week’s column. Unfortunately I’ve received none of it. But still, I don’t see what the big deal is. I think that it’s pretty well documented that white people ruin slang. Why do you think Black guys don’t use “bro” or “brother” anymore? Because it sounds corny when it’s coming from the mouth of two guys who wouldn’t be out of place appearing on NBC’s Thursday Night line up.

I swear to you, today I heard two white couples threatening to “get jiggy with it.” I felt just like an Indian dude witnessing litter, as tear trickled down my cheek.

My point is that white people finding out that “bananas” is an slang adjective will just lead to their devouring and overusing the term. And why did they need to find out? I’m sure they were still giddy from describing things as “off the hook.” I mean they hadn’t even gone though all the permutations of that phrase (“off the ringer” “off the chain”). But I’ve officially called bananas, as earlier this week I heard two high school girls spelling the word.

At least we’ve still got censored.

May-tastic!!!!

Is it just me or does May appear to be shaping up as a month full of some pretty promising releases? I’m reluctant to say, but I think there’s a chance that too much music is coming out next month.

I mean, I really don’t think that I can fully give each of the albums that I’m planning on picking up next month the attention that they deserve. For me there are five albums coming out next month that I can’t wait to hear. I’ll probably pick them up either the day they come out or the following day.

Thus I present;

Mathan’s May Musical Must-haves!

Ryan AdamsCold Roses

I’ll admit I’m eagerly awaiting this double album. It’s funny because I can’t pinpoint exactly when I became a Ryan Adams fan (although I’m sure if I read through my archives I could). But now I’m a full on fiend. I’m actually on the verge of scouring Ebay looking for concert bootlegs.

But anyway, I’m such a fan of Ryan Adams that I don’t even think there’s a way I could be disappointed with this album. And it comes out Tuesday!!!!!!

QuasimotoFurther Adventures of Lord Quas

I’ve got to give credit where credit is due; Jeff Fernandez was the one up put me down Quas. I think it stemmed from an IM way back in the Dirty Dozen days. Jeff urged me to pick up The Unseen. I eventually did, and I was slayed! That album alone made me want to do drugs.

Again, I don’t see how the new album could be a letdown. Especially since Tayo’s been raving out it, and he and I are usually on the same wavelength with musical matters.

Nine Inch NailsWith Teeth

Y’know what; I actually like The Hand That Feeds. Maybe it’s because Trent is giving me my own personal gun show. Perhaps it’s his oddly seductive pout. I don’t know, but the single didn’t turn me off.

Downward Spiral is a classic and The Fragile is one of those, rare, double albums that doesn’t seem overly long. Are my expectations super high? Nope, but I’m pretty sure I’ll get another solid effort.

Weezer Make Believe

I’m not as excited as I should be about this album. I used to love Weezer. But the new single had to grow on me. I almost panicked when I didn’t immediately love it. As it stands right now I can listen to it, and I almost like it. I think I just think the video is weak, that that’s affecting my view of the song.

GorillazDemon Days

But speaking of a video that I’m seriously diggin’ it’s Feel Good Inc. It could be that I just dig Gorillaz videos. It could be the De La Soul appearance. It could be that the sick song picks up right were the debut left off. It’s probably a combination of all three. This song is stuck in my head.

I was nervous when I heard that Dan the Automator wasn’t coming back for the sophomore effort, because his production is always innovative. Danger Mouse has assuaged my fears by filling the Automator’s shoes very nicely.

There you have it. Those are the five albums that I plan on buying next month. They will most likely provide the soundtrack for a decent period of time. My only problem is that Nine Inch Nails, Ryan Adams and Quasimoto are all being released on the same day, thus my statement about too much quality product.

But I’ve bored you long enough. Read these guys;

May 3rd

Michael C has a very enlightening column.

Shawn speaks my mind and continues to give props to Jeff Buckley. For both of those I give him props.

Aaron’s is much funnier than yours is. And he gets much more feedback than I do, perhaps because he prints his.

Toby B spills the beans on Jakob’s pop.

Jeff begins with Chitlin’s, touts the joys of fast food and blasts Las Vegas. Viva Jeff Fernandez.

Kyle is telling the truth about UNKLE.

Mike Eagle writes his best column ever, every week. I particularly enjoyed his refreshing take on religion and race.

Gloomchen is amazing. She should really be getting paid for her work. Someone should scoop her up.

May 10th

Tayo has plenty of good news, and some things that make him sad (many of which also sadden me.)

Phil touches the tip of the iceberg that is controversy around The Source. It should continue this week.

Ian’s got lots of news on concerts and festivals. I’m sure there’s something up your taste in music.
