Marvel Handbook (5/11/05)

Marvel Handbook

Welcome to another edition of the Marvel handbook. I’m Jim Trabold of course. With a good amount of emails to cover so hope Daron’s up for it. So Daron how is life treating you?

Life’s been treating Daron rather poorly. He’s working the overnight shift for seven days. Thusly, he “asked” (all you need to know is that a sharp stick and multiple puncture wounds were involved) me to join you this week, Jim. Of course you don’t know that. Boy, I really love this! -Chris

Good good. Care to get started?

Let’s do this like Brutus!

Then let’s…

Jim emails

Hey Jim,

Love the column and all your little color changing text buddies…etc, etc,

I have a question for you about the Crimson Commando (if that is the guy I am thinking of). I stopped collecting comics mid to early 90’s. The last time I remember seeing him was in an X-book annual where some members of the Freedom Force where attempting to rescue somebody out of Gulf War Kuwait. The speedster of the team (I can’t remember his name, but he originally with the Commando and Stonewall) was beheaded, Pyro and Blob where captured, and the Commando was gravely wounded. Avalanche seemed to come out OK. I vaguely remember the Blob and Pyro trying to take revenge on Avalanche for leaving them, but what ever happened to Crimson Commando? Just curious.

The speedster was Super Sabre.

Crimson Commando was mortally wounded and became a cyborg. He took the name the Commando.

He first appeared in Spider-Man #18-20. He fought Spidey.

The last time we saw him was X-Men Annual # 2 he was part of Project Wide Awake.

Crimson Commando may have been Wide Awake, but I’m not. I just got back from seeing Chitty Chitty Bang Bang on Broadway. It was fantasmogorical! It’s hard to get up for comics after watching a car fly around in a building for three hours!

Here’s a question for Jim:

For one of your huge projects can you do a reading order/checklist for the Marvel 2099 titles? I’m talking about the old titles (2099 Unlimited, 2099: Genesis, Ghost Rider 2099, etc.), not the one-shots Marvel put out a month or two back…

Does anyone remember the Child Catcher in the original 1968 Chitty Chitty Bang Bang film? He was pretty scary right? Well the character in the stage production is terribly frightening! I was shuddering in my seat. He almost looked like a goblin of some sort. It really was an amazing night.

20 years of Deadpool

Actually got this request first, so I’ll do him (Have you always felt this way about Deadpool, Jim? You should seek him out and tell him how you feel.) but here’s the problem with Deadpool. He’s only been around since 1990.

That’s about 35 years too long by my estimate!

1990: making his grand entrance in New Mutants vol1, issue 98. He was introduced as a villain of Cable’s and working for Tolliver.

1991: That next year he appears in X-Force fighting Kane, Deadpool then shows up during Sabotage and rescues Black Tom and Juggernaut to take to Tolliver to hire. Then he shows up in Nomad and fights him even.

1992: Tolliver hires Deadpool to go after one of the X-Force members–Domino. He attacks her and defeats her and we find out she’s really Copycat. Deadpool and Toliver hold the real Domino later when Cable goes after her. Leading to the first Deadpool/Cable fight in X-Force. Cable beats him too.

1993: Deadpool and Sluggo start a search for Copycat in X-Force. They do find her but it’s a lead in to Deadpool’s first limited series as well. In the limited series Deadpool is sent on yet another mission for Tolliver. Along the way he must deal with Kane, Copycat, Juggernaut, Black Tom, Courier, Executive Elite, and Slayback.

1994: The second Deadpool limited series is the main appearance of the year. Deadpool vs. Black Tom and Juggernaut. But he gets the help of Siryn and Banshee as well.

1995: Deadpool started the year appearing in Silver Sable and fighting her. He then joined the Secret Defenders for 3 issues. Then appeared again in Silver Sable. He then appears in Wolverine and fights him. Siryn contacts Deadpool while undercover for X-Force. He frees Siryn but gets captured himself.

1996: Deadpool is freed when the X-Forcers come looking for info on Shatterstar at the institute.

1997: Deadpool gets his own series. He first has to help his partner Weasel, then he meets Siryn again. We find out he’s sick.

I’d be sick too, if I had that punum! He probably looked in the mirror.

Battles Hulk, he gets cured, Deadpool fights Vamp, Typhoid Mary, T-Ray, Deathtrap. He also goes back in time to Amazing Spider-Man # 47

1998: Deadpool meets Siryn again before The Drowning Man storyline. The storyline involved T-Ray, Blind Al, and Typhoid Mary. Then someone starts hunting Weapon Xers. He then joined the Heroes for Hire for a mission. He then goes to Greece finding out more of his destiny and meeting Bullseye again and fights Ajax in The Quick and the Dead. He then goes to Monte Carlo and battles Batroc. Deadpool learns more about what his destiny is. He meets Cable again as well.

1999: Dead Reckoning: Deadpool works for Mithras directive and fights Tiamat with Captain America’s help. Then he fights Doctor Bong, Bullseye, Black Talon, T-Ray and defeats him.

You said, bong. What are you Jay (of and Silent Bob fame)?

2000: Chapter X: Deadpool starts revealing some old adventures involving the Kingpin, Bullseye, Hammerhead, Loki, Wizard, Taskmaster, Constrictor, Thor and a few others. He also battles the likes of the Constrictor, Titania, Wolverine, and goes to space to fight Baron Zemo, back on Earth battles Black Panther in Cat Trap, oh and we find out who Titania really was. He battles Gambit and Wolverine in their series.

Let’s get to chapter Z, so we can deep six this sucker!

2001: Cruel Summer begins: Deadpool is hired to find a villain called Sack.

Sack! Seriously, is this column a crossover with the View-Askew Universe?

Deadpool is betrayed but cheered up by Copycat. The Promise: Deadpool has to take care of a man’s son after failing to save his life while going after the killer. Oh and Copycat is trying to make Deadpool love her. Talk of the Town: Deadpool goes after the Switchblade Sisters. End of the Road: Deadpool vs. Punisher as Peter Gnucci sends DP after Punisher. DP and Copycat start going out but she gets jealous of Siryn. Agent of Weapon X: The new Weapon X group recruits Wade to join them. Wade is forced to team with Kane., also go after Copycat, Sabretooth kills her in the end and they recapture Wade.

2002: Deadpool takes out the chip and attacks Weapon X all by himself. In the end though he was killed by them. Funeral For A Freak: Deadpool goes to his funeral as a ghost and then to the spirit world, but is brought back. Four fake Deadpools appear and it’s Deadpool’s job to stop them.

Somebody needs to stop ’em!

As well as fight T-ray again. Healing Factor: He sets up Deadpool Inc and is hired by Black Swan. He also has to go after the Rhino’s horn and shrunk him. His next mission is to protect Dazzler. DP and Taskmaster team up for a short time to battle Swan as well.

2003: Deadpool goes MIA in the Marvel Universe thanks to Rob Liefield and Agent X replaces him but Deadpool comes back in Agent X: Deadpool Walkin’: Black Swan and Deadpool show up and it’s Agent X job to deal with their problem. Deadpool and Agency X have to defeat Black Swan in the end

2004: New series: Cable/Deadpool comes out. If Looks Could Kill: Deadpool is hired to invade a lab by One World Church and runs into Cable. They fight a few times for the virus with DP taking it to OWC in the end. He joins the group and Cable goes in to find him and the virus. They have to use each others blood to save themselves. They team up and fight the leader of the church from spreading the virus. The Burnt Offering: Cable goes mad and tries to take over the world.

What X-Men character hasn’t tried to take over the world a few dozen times?

It’s up to DP and the X-Men as well as Six Pack to stop him. But in the end it takes the help of the Silver Surfer to take Cable down.

2005: Cable is left comatose after the last storyline. Thirty Pieces: Deadpool tries to find a way to save Cable. He also goes looking for the Fixer to help him. Six Pack on the other hand get trapped into Cable’s mind. Agent X shows up along the way and fights DP. But in the end he helps DP save Cable who wakes from the coma. Murder in Paradise: DP and Cable are on a mission to find who killed Haji Bin Barat but find DP did it and he don’t know why. This is the current story arc.

That’s it for this week. So let’s have our sign offs partner.

Jim, it was actually a pleasure. You weren’t as exciting as that flying car, but you were on your game this week. Keep a keen-eye out for that dreaded Child Catcher. Whether it’s in your dreams or in real life, you never know where he may be lurking.

One note: Finally caught up fully on the emails except for a few so make sure to keep emailing.

Reporting from the Marvel Universe I’m Jim Trabold. Have a good week and see you at the comic shop.
