FOX Overtakes ABC Wednesday Night

Despite some strong numbers for many of its rivals, FOX rolled to another ratings win Wednesday on the back of its franchise show, “American Idol.”

Overall, FOX averaged an 8.7 rating/14 share, beating the 7.4/12 for second place ABC. CBS’ 6.2/10 scored third just ahead of the 6.0/10 for NBC. UPN had a 3.0/5 and The WB was at 2.9/5.

ABC started the night off in the lead with a 10.7/18 for “Lost.” FOX’s season finale of “That ’70s Show” took second with a 5.5/9. NBC and CBS tied for third with “Dateline” and “60 Minutes.” On UPN, the finale of “America’s Next Top Model” posted a 3.8/6, while the first part of The WB’s “Smallville” had a healthy 3.2/5.

The 9 p.m. hour went to FOX thanks to “American Idol” (15.7/24), though it struggled in the second half-hour with “Stacked” (8.3/13). ABC’s first hour of “Alias” finished second with a 6.0/9. CBS’ went with “King of Queens” and “Yes, Dear” and finished third, ahead of the 5.3/9 for NBC’s “Revelations.” The WB moved to fifth with “Smallville” and a rerun of “Living with Fran.” On UPN, “Kevin Hill” had its season, and series, finale finish with a 2.2/3.

“Law & Order” managed an 8.2/14 to win the 10 p.m. time slot for NBC. CBS took second with the 8.1/12 for “CSI: NY.” ABC’s “Alias” finished third.
