The Child Wins Top Prize at Cannes

Unlike last year, this Cannes film festival has lacked the mainstream media attention of the Michael Moore campaign. With that said, the gritty urban drama, The Child, set in France won the top prize at the Cannes film festival.

The Child tells the story of a teenager who sells his new born son. Realizing he had made a mistake, the young man embarks on a journey to find his son and return the child to the mother.

For directors Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne this is their second Cannes win. They also won in 1999 for another teen drama, Rosetta.

Jim Jarmusch’s Broken Flowers, starring Bill Murray, took second place.

Best Actor honours went to Tommy Lee Jones. Jones starred and directed The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada. Best actress honours went to Hanna Laslo in Free Zone

The Cannes film festival is arguably the most prestigious film festival outside North America. Previous winners at Cannes are the films Fahrenheit 9/11, The Pianist, and Pulp Fiction.
