Chappelle Sets DVD Record

There’s still no timetable for the return of “Chappelle’s Show,” so fans are snapping up the shows that do exist at a record pace.

Paramount Home Entertainment says the season two DVD box set sold 500,000 copies in its first day of release last week, a single-day record for a television DVD package. The “Season 2 Uncensored” set went on to sell 1.2 million copies in its first week.

“Dave Chappelle has set a new standard for comedy, and this DVD … has now set the standard for TV-DVD,” Thomas Lesinski, president of worldwide home entertainment at Paramount Pictures, tells The Hollywood Reporter.

Along with the big sales for season two, the first season of “Chappelle’s Show” continues to set the standard for all TV shows on DVD. Paramount says sales of season one have now passed the 3 million mark.

The huge sales numbers may be connected to the fact that “Chappelle’s Show” might not be back for a while. Just a week after announcing a May 31 premiere date for the show’s third season, Comedy Central said the show would be postponed indefinitely.
