Shortly after the death of Pope John Paul II in April, CBS began developing a miniseries based on the life of the late pontiff. However, they are not the only network with pope-related material in the works.
ABC has launched a John Paul II project of its own and may have the advantage to get it to viewers first. ABC’s project already has a script, according to reports in the showbiz trade papers, while CBS is still in the early stages of development.
Certainly there is no shortage of drama in the late pope’s life story, ranging from his training for the priesthood at an underground seminary in Nazi-occupied Poland to his 26-year reign as leader of the Catholic Church.
Michael Hirst (“Elizabeth”) is writing the script for the ABC project. Lorenzo Minoli and Judd Parkin (CBS’ “Jesus”) will executive produce.
