Ok”¦ before I get on to this review I have something horrible to admit.

I haven’t played City of Heroes yet.

I know, I swear I’m like the only person I know who has yet to play it, and it’s not like I even have a good excuse. I managed to snag a copy on the cheap over at Target a month ago, and I haven’t gotten around to installing it yet.

So maybe I’m not the best person to be reviewing this book.

But on the other hand, it’s shaping up to be a damned good comic.

Ok, for those who haven’t read the first issue of this series a mysterious new villain named Lord Recluse has managed to take over the CoH in one fell swoop, leaving the once mighty heroes powerless and it’s most powerful champion The Statesman missing, possibly dead. A rag tag group of heroes, lead by the archer Manticore have banded together to find out what happened to Statesman, and get to the bottom of things.

Now in the second issue of the series, things get particularly sticky as we learn that the Statesman is alive, but certainly not well and the only hope for the city lies in finding the legendary Flame of Prometheus. Alas since Statesman’s powers dwell from the Greek God, Zeus this could cause a problem. Read up on your mythology people.

City of Heroes is a fast paced, sometimes violent, epic feeling comic that will not only appeal to fans of the game series, but comics fans in general. The art by David Nakyama gives the title a very nice Alex Ross-style look to it… Fans of titles like Kurt Busiek’s Avengers run and Geoff John’s work on JSA should enjoy this book.
