FX Developing Series Based On Hit Movie 'Crash'

Paul Haggis, who left a godd career as a TV writer to work on feature film scripts, is bringing one of his pet projects back to the small screen.

“Crash,” Haggis’ film about the ripple effects of a carjacking on a disparate group of people, is going into development as a series at FX; Haggis will serve as the executive producer.

The deal with FX is something of a full-circle moment for Haggis. According to The Hollywood Reporter, he initially developed “Crash,” which is based on his own experience as a carjacking victim, for television a several years ago. No network took him up on it, so he retooled the script for a feature film.

The decision turned out to be a solid one, as the movie has made close to $50 million, among the best performances this year by an independent release.

Don Cheadle, who stars in “Crash” and is also one of the movie’s producers, will serve as a co-exec producer of the show, along with the film’s Tom Nunan, Cathy Schulman and Bob Yari. Cheadle is also likely, though it’s not yet confirmed, to appear in and direct episodes of the show if it’s picked up.

The producers are also talking with other members of the cast, including Brendan Fraser, Sandra Bullock, Matt Dillon and Ludacris, about continuing thier roles.

Prior to writing “Crash” and “Million Dollar Baby,” for which he earned an Oscar nomination, Haggis worked on such shows as “thirtysomething” (where he won an Emmy for writing), “EZ Streets,” “Due South” and “Family Law.”
